Afro Hair Transplant and best

Hi gents,

I am black dude and seriously considering a hair transplant. I have a receding hairline and have thinning around the crown.

Do I need to take into account my hair type and texture?

I'll appreciate if someone can furnish me with a list of reliable and proven hair transplant clinics in London. There is a saturation of clinics in London and quite difficult to make a distinction between the decent reliable clinics and the rubbish ones.

I am really trying not make the same mistakes as others on this forum.

Thanks,

Phil

You can check out the clinic sections further down the forum. See if you like their results and then contact them. All their contact info is there. I think they all have experience with Afro hair.

You do have quite a bit of hair loss. What are you wanting to achieve with a hair transplant? The front third covered, the whole area covered?
Have you looked into hair loss meds? Without them, you may continue to lose hair. There is a chance you could suffer side effects from them, therefore careful consideration should be adhered to.

Actually I'd like both areas covered. I used Minoxidil for sometime but stopped as my scalp started reacting to it. This was through the Belgravia Centre in London. I am thinking on starting back on it again but this time the foam as gathered the ingredient that causes the reaction most of the time is not present in the foam. Any rough idea on how many grafts I might need based on the pics so far?

Hi Bigmac,

Quick update on my research so far.

I have had three phone/Whatsapp initial consultations where I sent pics and am quickly seeing some of the red flags already. The clinics/doctors that seem to be genuinely interested in the best possible results for their patients do seem to be in no rush to get your money.

Hair Dr( Dr Arshad) asked me to grow my hair a further two weeks and then resend them pics before they can progress with the consultation. I spoke to Dr.Tam, what a breath of fresh air with his honesty. He told me point blank the he knows someone who can do a better job than him as they specialise in afro hair. Am hoping to have a consultation with them next week, in fact they called this morning advising he can see me at the end November and wanting me to grow my hair a bit longer in that time. I've asked for an earlier consultation, I believe it's very visible the work that needs doing once you see me in person anyway.

The 3rd clinic which I don't know if am allowed to mention have booked me a consultation with the doctor on 04/11 which I am going to cancel. They immediately gave a me price of six thousand pounds over 2 procedures, 2000 grafts for each one after sending them some pics on whatsapp. Advised the 2nd procedure can be done after 6-8 weeks whilst the Hillside Clinic have advised I'll have to wait at least 8-12 months if memory serves me right for the 2nd procedure. They've also offered me discounts which they claim will end at the end of October smh.

I think I almost already know which two clinics am going to consider.

Cheers,

Phil

Hi Phil. It`s good that you`re not rushing into anything. You want to get it right the first time giving you your best chance of success. Any clinic can be mentioned. You will find some who will book you up after the briefest of contact without going into much detail. It`ll be interesting to hear what Dr Arshad says once you`ve grown your hair longer and the clinic that Dr Tam has referred you to.

Did they mention hair loss meds?

Harley St. Healthcare is the one I was referring to. I have stumbled across some terrible reviews regarding this clinic and I'll be staying clear. I have an in person consultation with the Hillside Clinic in Nottingham this Saturday with the doctor recommended to be afro hair specialist (Dr.Tam's referral - Dr Ganesh Krishan) after extensive phone calls with one of their medical staff who turns out to have also worked with Dr.Tam before.

There isn't been any talk of meds other than the sales guy from the Harley St. Healthcare clinic mentioning it will be good for me to use Minoxidil after treatment.

The Hillside Clinic don't sound or appear to be cheapest either from cost indications am getting so far. I'll update again when I have my consultation this Saturday. I really want to get it done and at least have the scars healed in time for Christmas.

i'll keep you lot posted

I did see Hillside had a Google ad offering cheap deals, I never clicked on the ads so not sure what they were.
HSHC seems to hire whatever doctors are available as they change every so often.
Dr Krishnan was with Ziering medical in Birmingham. Is he now working out of Hillside?

Good luck with your consult. Have your questions written down so you don`t forget to ask something.

Yes I saw that he's listed on the Ziering Clinic website. I was initially meant to have the consultation at the Hammersmith clinic which I suspect is one of Ziering's but heading to Nottingham now

Mate can I thank you for this forum! This is not the easiest thing to sift through and could be quite daunting given how many clinics/doctors are more interested in just your money. Yes I do have a list of questions already prepared and under no circumstances will be putting down a deposit on the day of my consultation either, regardless of whoever it is. Am not prepared to make any decision in the moment. I'd ideally want to have a consultation with Dr. Arshad before taking it any further.

It's always good to have a think about it after your consultation if you're not sure. Sometimes it is ok to book on the day if you've researched the clinic and had a lot of interaction with them.
I'm glad the forum has helped you.
Keep us updated on how you get on.

Hi,
I absolutely agree with Phil's positive comments about this forum (having just found it). I have afro hair too and I'm very keen to have a hair transplant. I've read lots over the last few months, and was developing some 'gut feelings' (positive and negative) about certain clinics/surgeons, but this forum (and, particularly this discussion between you and Phil) has been very, very helpful for me too. I've read slightly conflicting things about the particular challenges of doing FUE on afro hair etc etc. Thank you both (and good luck, Phil)! Would be great to hear any feedback and advice. Cheers. Al

Hello mate,

Apologies for the late reply on this. I have just been occupied with exams and work. I am no expert on this subject and as good as newbie like yourself but I can tell you my experience so far.

First thing is try some meds Finasteride and Minoxidil to stabilise and regrow your hair if you can. Let a HT be the last resort. I have actually decided to go down this path as we speak. I have had one proper consultation with Dr. Krishnan of Hillside Clinic and he was kind of pushing for an FUT as it easier obviously and he claimed he could get more grafts harvested as my donor area is not that great. He advised he could get a max of 3k grafts with FUE but can get more with FUT which I am not prepared to have. This will be in two sessions costing me something in region of £15K for the two sessions. I was under no illusion this will be cheap but wasn't expecting it to be that high either.

The FUT would be around 5k but am not prepared to have a scar at the back of my head. With afro hair it's not as straightforward due to the curly nature and general notion is that it's harder to use the FUE technique and takes longer, hence requires someone with experience in that hair type. If your keen on proceeding with a HT always bear this factor in mind that you need a surgeon experienced in afro hair and money shouldn't the primary deciding factor either.

The 2nd consultation with the HairDr I was told I wouldn't be a good candidate for a HT due to my donor area. I understand their reason but also think to some degree they were playing safe. I have a 3rd consultation with a Doctor in Belgium (Dr. Bisanga, BHR Clinic) in early Dec. He's a black doctor with afro hair experience so am hoping I might stand a better chance with him who knows.

I started with topical Finasteride and Minoxidil mixed combo treatment which I reacted to very badly with rashes all over my head including face and neck, itchiness and very acute dryness of the skin hence stopped last week for the sides to clear. I am having a consultation with my GP on Friday with the view to discuss getting on oral Fin starting with a very small dose of 0.25 ml and see how I get on and take it from there. I think I might be allergic to MInoxidil so I'll have to look for another hair growth stimulant to suffice.

Finally, I am sure you've read on multiple threads on this forum that this is not a process to be rushed. You need to get it right first time round as you only have so many grafts at your disposal for a HT and the financial implication for normal working people like us is quite substantial. I'll keep us posted on any further updates from my consultation with Dr. Bisanga and treatments I embark on.

HTH,

Phil

Hi Phil.
It's good to hear the forum is still helping you with your research.
You are correct about Afro hair. The hair grafts are usually curled like a C shape which means it`s harder to extract them and takes a lot of skill. If you're lucky the curl may not be so prominent or it just has a slight curve to it.

This picture illustrates the differences.

It's a shame that you reacted badly to the topical. At a guess, I'd agree with you that it was the Minoxidil content. Hopefully, you're ok with the Oral. With you seeing your GP about it, ask if they will prescribe it for you.

Anything else just ask and good luck.

Thanks Bigmac.

Do you have any suggestions regarding a growth stimulant other than Minoxidil with proven efficacy?

I've done a bit of research regarding Stemoxydine and thinking of trying that out if the oral Fin is tolerable.

You could look into Lipogaine. It is alcohol free with many claiming the alcohol content In Minoxidil was the cause of scalp irritation.
Nanoxidil is supposed to be good for people who suffer irritation.
I`ve not used either.
Were you using the foam or the liquid Minoxidil?

U

I was using the liquid. The one I used had no alcohol or propylene glycol. I think am just allergic to Minoxidil. The first time I attempted treatment with Belgravia centre I had a reaction too as theirs had those ingredients. This time I was hopeful thinking since the composition was devoid of those 2 ingredients I would be good but the reaction was even worse than the first time. I have done a quick research on Nanoxidil and it appears the studies are quite scanty and the molecular structure is almost identical to Minox. That indicates I'll most likely react to it as well. I can't afford what I've just been through for the second time. In fact am not completely in the clear yet from the sides I suffered from Minox.

Could even be a blessing in disguise as I have seen a couple of postulations about MInoxidil gains solely dependent on the continuous use of it or else you lose ground/gains the moment you come off it. And that no other growth stimulant will suffice or help you keep your gains as the hair is addicted to Minox. particularly

If am tolerant of the 0.25 oral Fin dose then the plan is to use Stemoxydine as a growth stimulant, weekly dermarolling and then condition my hair with rosemary oil mixed with jojoba oil as a carrier.

You are correct about the Minoxidil, any gains you make you will lose if you stop using it. It is a lifelong commitment.
Hopefully, the Finasteride works and you don`t suffer from any sides. It is a small percentage who get sides but they can be pretty bad for some.
It sounds like you have your regime all planned. Keep us updated on how you get on.
Good luck with it.
