Men often find the idea of hair thinning and hair loss to be an extremely sensitive subject and one which they do not wish to talk about. I don't think there are more younger bald men as a percentage than there was say 10-20 or even 30 years ago. As a population there are more people so more bald men as a consequence to that. Transplants and hair loss medications are firstly far more successful than they were 20 years ago and far more acceptable so we see many more men doing something about their loss where as before it was accepted that there was little you could do than as you say wear a hat, buzz it short, get a toupee or have a comb over.
