Concealers on Scars

Hi all, Has anyone had experience and/or good results from using concealers on a donor scar? I watched Joe's video's but it did not address the use of these products on scars. I have a pretty bad one on the right side (it's in my gallery at the one month mark) and if anything it has gotten worse. I got a haircut last week and she went a little too short, leaving the scar showing very badly. I've been wearing a hat all week until enough hair grows to cover it. I used Dermatch years ago, but have never tried it on a scar. Thanks for any help

Hi Thincity. When I used concealer on my scar it was DermMatch that worked out best for my situation. I`ve heard of some who used Couvre with good effect but not sure what colours are supplied.
I don`t quite remember, but have you considered SMP in the scar? I had it done and it worked very well.

Hi TC,

I didn't think to review the concealers on how well they conceal scars but I think it is safe to say that the Dermatch and Couvre type of concealers would work best. Between the two, I think it comes down to little details that may sway you as they would be very close to each other regarding efficacy.

Thanks Bigmac. I'm going to order some today, too late to help right now, but in the event of this happening again, I'll have some on hand. I have considered several options, including beard hair into my worst scar(s). I'm in a slight holding pattern now, as I need (not want) some additional work. I have ruled out any additional strip surgery, so it will have to be FUE. Due to my pretty extensive scars, I would rather have long hair FUE. I'll post something after I try the Dermatch on the scar(s).
Hi Joe, Thanks. Please keep up your videos! They are very informative!

No problem, happy to help.
I know SMG supply a brand called Fill-in which is a more compact powder than DermMatch which may work better on scars. Give them a call, they may be able to ship out today.

4 awesome repairs with SMG
I have never used the Concealers on my scar either but i have seen some good results in person with SMP done into them. Having said that if your planning on further work then you have the option of FUE into them at the same time. Please let us know how you get on with the concealer in the mean time when it arrives ;)
Best wishes BN

I've used Couvre on and off for years and I've found it pretty effective with hiding scars.

Ok, I ordered the Dermatch from Amazon with free two day shipping. Price was the same as on Dermatch's website ($47.00) but I saved on the shipping. I ordered the silver/gray color as it's the closest to my hair color. I haven't colored my hair in almost two years, so it has silver, gray, some black and some white. I used it on the scar and it worked great. I would give it an "A", you can still see the unevenness in my hair due to the large size of the scar, but it covered the flesh showing through. I used Dermatch probably about 10 or 12 years ago and mostly to try and hide the mini-grafts. I did a small test sample on my scalp on one of the "alley's" next to the crown. I'd give it a "B". I may try and use it lightly over the entire scalp in the future just to see how it looks. However, I found when I used Dermatch in the past, it became a crutch. Also I use Rogaine Foam at night, which you cannot do with Dermatch on. I'm hoping to have one last surgery in the next year to remove the last of the mini-grafts and lightly cover some areas that look very odd. My only option is FUE, and I almost have to go unshaven FUE due to my extensive scarring.

Glad you got sorted with ordering the DermMatch, hope it works well for you. It would be great to see a picture of before and after to see wow effective it is.
How many grafts are you hoping for with your next Fue session?

DermMatch is good but just be a bit wary of getting your hair too wet with it on, as from my experience it has a tendency to run more than the other concealers.

Hi Bigmac, I'm due for another haircut this coming week. Obviously I'll be asking her to be careful near my scar. I have been going much shorter on my hair for about a year. The worse scar is somewhat visible in the days following the haircut, but this time you could see skin and a lot of it. I'll see if I can talk my wife into taking some before and after's. I was told I had 1K left via strip and 2k via FUE. I will not be doing any more strips. I plan on having a small procedure done in February just to remove the last of the mingrafts, and possibly a small amount of beard hair into the bad scar as a test. If all goes well a final FUE surgery of whatever size the surgeon feels will be best. I was really hoping to do long hair FUE, I know it's very tedious and only very small sessions cane be done.

Thanks Pete, for now I hope only to use the dermatch in the event of bad/too short haircut, but I will keep the water issue in mind.

Sounds like a good plan to test the beard grafts for the scar, I had some put in one of my scars and they grew very well. I think SMG do 500 graft unshaven FUE. I had some with Dr Josephitis that worked well for me.
Best of luck with the future procedures.

I'm of the opinion that concealers don't bode well for scars unfortunately. I've only had positive experiences applying them to my hair loss areas. If you want true concealment I strongly recommend finding a surgeon that can use beard hair/FUE into scars.

Hi Hairhope,

I'm afraid I will have to disagree with you regarding Dermatch on a scar. I used Dermatch many years ago to help conceal the terrible mini-grafts, and it did help. That being said, in direct/bright light it looked somewhat chalky and made the hair appear dry. I used it, as I really had no choice. Dermatch worked excellent to conceal the scar. The scars in the pictures appear thin, however there is permanent shock loss above and below, or the skin may simply have stretched. With the little hair present and Dermatch, it is almost invisible. I agree with you on the use of beard hair into scars, and I'm seriously considering it. Congratulations on your repair!

Here are two images, one showing the scar, the second image is with Dermatch on the scar.
