Do men and women have different amounts of normal shedding than each other

Probably a silly question but I've noticed that when the other half and my daughter brushes their hair they seem to shed like hell yet they never look like they have lost a hair at all afterwards, why? I know if I had ever lost that much hair after brushing (before the onset of mpb) I would be in a right state if panic lol......

Hi bullitnut,

There is no great variant in the shedding cycle between men and woman under normal circumstances, examples such as hormone cycles, post pregnancy will effect the ratio of hairs shed, increasing it temporarily, and after a period of time the balance of shedding and regrowth return to normal.

The difference you see maybe simply their hair is much longer than yours so appears to be that much more in the brush.

We all shed around 100 odd hairs per day, maybe tugging with a brush will remove a few more, but not a significant amount.

Not a silly question. Anytime my mom or my sister come to visit, I find myself thinking the same thing and wondering how they can shed soooo much without actually losing hair. As the other response noted, it's most likely just perception and their generally longer hair and extra brushing makes it seem like they're shedding more than maybe they really are.

But seriously.... Between the shedding and the makeup and the curling irons and the hair spray, it's enough to make a guy crazy. :)
