Are there many Westerners using these clinics? I can see many people from poorer Eastern European countries opting for the cheap option.

I know of people from the UK travelling to cheap Tech clinics. I think those are the ones who have not done any research and just think that all hair transplants are of the same quality.

Maybe they have done the research but cant afford 6000 euros...,not everyone has that money.
Believe it or not, there are hair tech clinics that produce better results than world class surgeons

Yiddo,

When I went to Istanbul for the second time in June of last year I went to one of these technician clinics for a consultation to see what the big deal was. When I left I felt like I escaped with my life. Yes, I'm exaggerating but the feeling of getting out was like a relief I've not felt often.

While in this clinic I spoke to three brothers, all had just finished their procedures (it was 3 pm) and all three had 4000 grafts. They were 3 out of 10 patients of the day. When I asked how many were in the clinic I was told "only" ten patients as it was slow due to Ramadan.

After 30 seconds of speaking with the one brother that spoke English I realized that these patients had absolutely no idea what they were getting involved in. I'm not talking about how bad their decision may have been, I'm talking about them not realizing what it was that they were doing. All they knew was that they were going to get a hair transplant which meant taking hair from the back and putting it in the front and that it was super cheap. That's it. When I asked how they found out about the clinic, I was told that they were told by people they know that they should go to this clinic. That was all the research they did.

This was not an isolated case but is the norm for these clinics. They market themselves based on price, as anyone can see if they do a general "hair transplant" search on Google, and on amenities, such as luxury car service and even personal tour guides, food, etc. To go to Turkey for a hair transplant means that, statistically, you probably signed up for a hair transplant vacation.

Its a good post joe, i totaly agree with you. I probably could of made my point better. Also probably over stated these clinics performing the same results as top surgeons. My point with this, is there is a certain dr from turkey, ill call him dr D...that is recently not producing the results he once was, due to the fact that his technicians do everything. Even extractions....and he is meant to be one of turkeys top surgeons, and his price reflects this aswell.

Youve used the phrase " minefield " before when describing turkey. Its pretty spot on.

My point is as you said really....money...it is what draws you in. The money being one, and the second being how many grafts they can offer you. 4000 plus grafts can be quite an appealing thing, but the reality is, as you know yourself, not everyone is capable of producing that in one sitting.

I was in the taxi heading to the cosmedica clinic with an iranian engineer, who had no idea how they put the grafts in. He was just told by a friend to go there.

Im currently travelling at the minute but when i get back i will do a write up of my experience, a few things which will probably be similar to your visit.

We are lucky to have people like yourself, janna, garageland etc on this site.

Just a quick question joe, i know its none of my business, but how come your not on htn anymore

Hi Yiddo,
Thanks for your follow up. This industry is getting worse. Ten years ago the quality of information that could be found through research was much higher for a number of reasons but now there is an entire segment of the industry that is growing faster than anyone imagined due to the fact that they AVOID the attention that research can bring and it's done by operating in the shadows and the background of any given market, such as Turkey. This market segment has actually grown and evolved to control their own image by creating vast networks of "patients" and commenters that promote not just clinics, but agencies that find patients for these clinics. The agencies themselves become the named entity and the doctor can and does change from time to time with the excuse usually being that the new doctor is much better than the old doctor. It still boggles my mind but in general the Turkish market is dangerous for the average consumer and only a couple of names are worth considering out of the entire country, which has more hair transplant clinics than all of Europe combined.
Regarding where I do and do not post, I don't think it's worth rehashing but I will say that I prefer to post in a positive environment where I can freely help others. The rest is online, you just have to look.
