gynecomastia from Propecia

Hi guys,

I started Propecia at the age of 30, been using it for 6 years now with no legitimate side effects. It has worked well maintaining my hair with a little new growth.

About 5 months ago I gained 6 pounds in weight which was unusual as I eat healthy and exercise on a regular basis, I now think I have developed gynecomastia as man boobs are appearing.

Can I take anything in conjunction with Propecia to prevent gynecomastia? I don't want to lose my hairs but also don't want to wreck my body.

Any help appreciated.

Surgical removal of the fatty tissue is the primary option for this. Some guys on the bodybuilding forums claim anti Estrogens have helped them.

I know this sounds a little harsh and its not meant to be dude, but could it just be your getting a little older? i know when i got into my thirties i put on a little weight, and its not uncommon for men to put on some weight in the chest area and belly as they get older.

Please don't take that the wrong way, i only said that as i know from experience when i got into my thirties i put weight on, and then found it practically impossible to shift it compared to when i was in my twenties.

It could well be the propecia but the fact you have had no sides and been on it a long time is throwing me bud.

"Wise Traditions" the small farming/nutrition magazine had a good article on Moobs this quarter. I see it is available online so I will cut and paste it below. Maybe it is not diet related but good information to have none the less.

Small farmers are good people. They are my kind of people and I love being around them.

I posted this link last week in another thread. You can check any personal care products you use for endocrine disruptors along with other harmful chemicals.

BTW if you eat meat, fish, poultry it's important that they are eating a natural diet which does not include soy.

Moobs, Man Boobs and SoyPosted on March 11, 2015 by Kaayla Daniel

So many of our young men are growing breasts that the word €œmoobs € €” short for €œman boobs € €” has entered the popular vocabulary. While the word itself sounds amusing, it €™s a heartbreaking trend for young men and their families, and a booming business for surgeons who specialize in breast reduction surgery. It €™s anywhere from $4,000 to $9000 depending on the procedure and the area of the country, not to mention the surgeon €™s reputation and self esteem.

Why is this happening? Environmental estrogens are surely a factor. But so is soy. Young men at the highest risk are those who were given soy infant formula during infancy and/or who regularly drank soy milk during their childhoods and teenage years. Such boys are not only at risk for €œmoobs € but may show other estrogenic signs as well, including lowered quantity and quality of sperm, undersized genitals, undescended testicles, and other reproductive system problems.

Scientists first linked phytoestrogens (plant estrogens) with lowered sperm count and other reproductive problems in the 1940s when they diagnosed clover disease in sheep. Red clover contains a type of phytoestrogen known as coumestans, which are similar in their effect to the isoflavones found in soybeans. When sheep graze heavily on red clover, they can develop red clover disease, which causes normal male sheep to became infertile and castrated males €” called wethers €” to experience teat enlargement and nipple discharge. Rodents, primates and humans experience similar feminizing effects if their reproductive development is disrupted by estrogens that either interact directly with the testes or that affect plasma gonadotrophin or sex hormone concentrations.

Soy industry spokespeople tend to downplay side effects from estrogenization and testosterone-lowering by claiming phytoestrogen consumption to be protective against prostate cancer and atherosclerosis. Although the possibility that soy foods or supplements could prevent these deadly conditions makes headlines, few men hear that the downside is demasculinization, which in some men manifests as gynecomastia.
Although many studies link soy consumption to masculinization, few have looked at €œmoobs. € A study for the National Cancer Institute completed at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, however, reported that soy-eating men experienced €œnipple discharge, breast enlargement and slight decreases in testosterone. € Although the researchers concluded these side effects were inconsequential and few men would see visible €œtesticle shrinkage € or €œmassive breast enlargement, € the bottom line is the subjects of the study showed feminization from high soy phytoestrogen consumption. Whether their €œmoobs € came in large or small, their development signified estrogenization, lowered testosterone levels and overall hormonal imbalance.

Can gynecomastia be reversed naturally? It depends, but cleaning up the environment and the diet to remove environmental and phytoestrogens are critical first steps. Many clinicians such as Kim Schuette of Biodynamic Wellness in Solana Beach, California, report reversals(in a letter in the Spring 2015 issue of Wise Traditions) just from eliminating soy milk and soy foods from the diet.

That €™s the good news, but sadly, not all boys will be so fortunate. In addition to the obvious factors of dose and duration, a key issue is timing. The €œwindows of vulnerability € for phytoestrogen exposure is wide, and goes from conception to adulthood. High risk windows are in utero, infancy, shortly before puberty and during puberty. That said, men remain at some risk for €œmoobs € throughout their lives and so would do well to take it easy on the soy.

Thanks for the answers guys.
If Soy is so bad it should have the same warnings as cigarettes, why do they put Soy in so much of our food?

Hi JT, I would see your doctor and or pharmacist or speak to whoever provides the Propecia for you.

Make sure no change in the tablet and it is genuine as some do have sides when they change the tablet if applicable to you and can have sides due to that and going to a generic tablet.

If the same tablet then an option for some is to take less dosage, change frequency or cease and look at other options for DHT blocking in the form of supplementary or herbs etc but they are not as potent usually as Propecia.

Certainly the starting point is to see your GP and go from there.

JT I think if you were to research long enough what you might eventually conclude is that industries sometimes will do whatever is necessary in order to not only make more money but also protect their industries and the food industry being one of the very large players is no different. This would include legislation, media, front groups etc. Of course they are not alone the same can easily be seen in medicine, energy, banking etc and once one understands this thoroughly one can better take steps to protect themselves and not rely on others so much.

Soy is a pure money crop. Extremely easy to grow, very easy to store and highly versatile. It can be turned into pretty much anything and why it is often found in just about every processed type of food in one way or another. All these traits are key in having a product that is very profitable. Foods that can be stored for extended periods of time are excellent sources of profit .

I raise chickens and nothing will make a chicken grow faster or produce more eggs then soy but I don €™t feed them soy and settle for smaller chickens that don €™t lay as many eggs by feeding them table scarps, free vegetable cutting from a local produce store and some supplemental soy free organic feed. When one understands the economics of raising animals for food they then understand the numbers better and why the food system currently works the way it does.

A bag of soy based feed can run about $10/50lb bag while an organic soy free feed can be about $40/lb €¦ €¦yes only a $30 difference but when you start doing the math of a chicken eating 2lbs of feed per week and you have a flock of say 1000 birds then those numbers might start to matter depending on what you goal happens to be. Often times people can fall into this trap of adding numbers up into their head and they start getting all excited rubbing their hands together thinking if I do this or that I can make this much and then they completely start to go off track which is what has happened to a great deal of the food industry.

Some choose not to believe this and that becomes a personal choice. I prefer to stay away from doctors and the medical system so knowing what I am eating and where it is coming from is important for me. And as I stated earlier the issue you are experiencing could very well not be diet/environment related.

I also believe if people were to understand that someone was doing something that was harming a great many people strictly for more profit the outrage would completely turn the whole system upside down which often times creates a reversal of fortune for those that simply don't want to give it up. So yes the food system is very serious business. One needs to protect themselves and their families. Most especially their children as the young ones are dependent on the adults for advice and direction in life.

JT it €™s just information. I believe if someone has information that might help another who might not have that information they should pass it along. It is up to that person to then choose to use it or dismiss it using their own reasoning.

Good point this Sl, i remember a long time ago i got my prescription from a different pharmacy and was given a generic Finasteride (poss Dr Reddies) and i noticed slight breast tenderness for a few weeks so i bought some online until i got my next prescription from my GP to use at my regular pharmacy and the tenderness went away.

Thanks guys. I think I will begin lowering the dosage slightly and checking food for Soy content to see if it makes a difference.
