Hair Transplant with Artificial Hair

A 27-year-old woman, with a history of alopecia since childhood and without desire for further investigation, started implantation with biocompatible fibers in a private clinic in the summer of 2018. No tolerance test was done initially. In total, she had 9000 fibers implanted, distributed over 3 sessions. No aftercare controls were performed in the clinic. Her scalp became tender and erythematous after the third session of implantation in February 2019. After examination, the patient was found to have multiple, tender, erythematous nodules around the hairs. Pus was observed draining from many scalp areas. Constant pain and itching of the scalp were present in this period, and, consequently, she experienced sleeping problems. A scalp biopsy specimen showed a nonnecrotizing granulomatous foreign-body reaction. The scalp abscesses were reduced by injection of a single triamcinolone acetonide, 10 mg/mL, and the diffuse inflammation of the scalp was treated with topical mometasone. The treatment reduced pain and, together with an increased spontaneous fiber loss, resulted in the patient declining the opportunity of extraction.

Patients can undergo organ transplants and then rely on anti-rejection drugs for the rest of their lives. These drugs essentially trick the body into accepting the foreign-body or new organ. I wonder if a drug will ever be developed to allow synthetic hairs to be implanted and accepted by the scalp via such drugs. It certainly is a shift away from existing DHT blockers and would be a game changer for those with a limited donor area.

Artificial hair was banned at one point. Then they apparently changed how it's made and claim it is safe to use. I'll see if I can dig out the info I have on it.
The thing with it is that it has a little hook or know that holds it in place under the skin tissue. These strands snap leaving the knot under the skin. Every so often the patient has to go for maintenance where they replace damage hairs. I'm not sure how they retrieve the knots but I doubt it helps the scalp too much having them removed and inserted again.

Thanks Escar. Like me, I guess you`ve seen many problems associated with artificial hair. There are different types of artificial hair on the market. One may be better than the other.
