Joe Tillman gets PRP from Dr. Cooley

As some of you may know, I've been through a lot of surgeries and I've had the opportunity to try a lot of non-surgical treatments because of my involvement in the hair restoration industry. Dr. Jerry Cooley was one of two clinics I reviewed recently and he is one of the pioneers in PRP research and applications with regards to hair loss. When I was at his clinic for the first time, back in July of last year, I asked him about his PRP and he showed me an array of photographic documentation that convinced me that there was some validity to the claims that PRP can indeed help with hair loss.


On this latest trip we discussed PRP again and he suggested I give it a try to see if it can help the last area of my balding pattern that still has some native, albeit miniaturized, hair. This would be the bottom half of my crown and the fringe around the perimeter of my hair loss pattern.

Nice video documentation on PRP. I was just at SMG last week video taping Matt Zupan get the PRP treatment. You two should compare in 6 months. The protocol looks the same. Best of luck!

Whilst this treatment benefits those that suffer from miniaturisation of hairs. Did Mr Cooley advise how long the positive results are likely to last after one treatment?

I am assuming top ups are necessary.

We spoke about the duration of the effects and it seems like one year is the baseline but he said he's had many patients that last two or three years before visible decline was seen.

SBT,

If you are talking about shock of native hairs then perhaps, yes, as miniaturized hairs are more susceptible (in my opinion) to shock than terminal hairs in anagen but I don't think anyone should go into a surgery without expecting some amount of shock loss.

Thanks for the reply joe,one last question if a patient has work done on the front third ,would he risk shockloss in midscalp where no work is done.i kind of figured there is a chance of shockloss in areas worked on, but I wasn't sure about areas not worked on.thanks again joe, and your hair is looking good bro.

Shock can show up outside of the immediate recipient zone. My theory on this is that it has more to do with blood flow interruption than direct surgical interaction. It is unpredictable to say the least however I think with minimal incision sizes the potential is greatly reduced to the point of shock, outside of the target recipient zone, is mild at worst.

Regarding Dr. Ron, yeah, I spent time with him and the staff at SMG right after I was with Dr. Cooley in Charlotte. I came home with 70GB of video I'm sifting through so I hope you have a lot of popcorn. I'm still working through footage I have of Dr. Lupanzula and Dr. Karadeniz, too

How did your head feel afterwards? Any lasting numbness or discomfort?

Joe do you think Dr,cooley will post his results with this new treatment ,I think it will be a 1st ,I never can find result from prp treatment online, its like finding a needle in a hay stack,;;D,it would be a nice compliment to add to propecia and rogaine as aids in fighting hairloss,i guess only time will tell.

I didn't have any numbness to speak of but what I did have was just damned peculiar. I had bumps that formed around the perimeter of my crown which may have been the injection points. The bottom half of my crown was also quite itchy for a couple of weeks and the entire treated area was sore from the dermal rolling I was doing. The entire experience of PRP is completely uncharted territory for me. You put me into a surgical situation and it's passé at worst but this was just weird. It has been about ten weeks since my treatment and everything has been back to normal for quite some time.

I don't know. Right now we're concentrating on other things but this is something to consider. Getting to know Dr. Cooley has been an educational experience. The man is an encyclopedia of hair loss knowledge. He's told me about treatments he's worked on in the past that have been amazing.

I think I am, yes. I wanted to document this weekend but I've been working on a nagging website/email problem that's had me completely tied up. My challenge for documenting is to make sure my hair length is as close to my before photos as possible as I want this documentation to be fair and transparent.
