Hi there,
I am trying to figure out which products are safe to use with my hair; I am looking for some guidance. I suffered a major "attack" of hair loss about three months ago due to my scalp being too dry. (I don't want to re trigger it). I was told by my general physician that products containing alcohol are not good to use if you are experiencing hair loss; I think it is because it dries out the scalp? However, nearly every product I look at contains alcohol. One possibility is to consider the type of alcohol. There are many types I see, such as denatured alcohol, benzyl alcohol, and another alcohol that begins with a b, that has a similar name. I have also been told that you don't want alcohol listed in the first five ingredients; but sometimes there are some helpful products that have alcohol in the first five ingredients. Also, I know that some alcohols can act as a preservative for the product or be used to open up the hair cuticle.
I have also tried asking a **health professional that deals with skin advice on what products to avoid. They originally told me to just go ask a hair dresser. They said they couldn't do much else for me and their job was to stop my hair from falling out. I asked the them again, and they finally just said, don't use any products that irritate the scalp. They said that hair dye irritates the scalp, and to not dye my hair if it irritates my scalp. I am also trying to look for products, etc that will help moisturize my scalp. **I was also told by someone who went to the same place that the health care professionals at this place were not actual dermatologists; they don't have the extra three years of training to be one. I was advised to look for an "actual" dermatologist.
