Should I go for a HT or wait 12 months?

Evening all.

Just to give you a basic overview of where I am at the moment. I've been strongly considering a hair transplant now for a couple of months. I am 28 and I currently use Regaine and Alpecin shampoo. My initital attraction towards a HT was to avoid the nuisance of using various bits and bobs everyday and to also go back to the days of no longer worrying about my barnet. In terms of the Norwood scale, from consultations I have, I am a 3V with a tendency to class 5. I am favouring the strip method due to a number of reasons; primarily cost and also I intend to maintain my hair at a length similar to that of in the photos below-therefore, I cannot see a discernible difference in final appearance?

Anyway, I have had a number of online consultations, each with alternating advice. Perhaps niavely (?) I wanted - and still do - to undertake one period of surgery and hopefully that would be my hair sorted from then on. However, I am concerned that at this stage, I perhaps have not lost enough hair to warrant having the op. I do not want to be in the position of requiring to have another 'boost' up every 4-5 years for example.

The first clinic I was attracted to was HDC. The extensive portfolio seemed to speak for itself. From the photographs I sent through to HDC, I received a prompt response predicting that my donar area could potentially take 3500 grafts. We arranged to have a in person consultation to discuss further and go over any concerns I may have.

Then came the bombshell of sorts; after speaking with a gentleman from 'The Harley Street Hair Clinic', he confirmed my initial concerns. He believed it would be irresponsible to have me as a patient at the moment due to my age and degree of hair loss. I am terrified of the idea of having a transplant undertaken and then the surrounding hair falling by the wayside, thus leaving a totally unnatural appearance. He explained that at my stage, it was unpredictable of which way my hairloss would go. That was that decision made then, so I thought. I'll leave it a couple of years.

I thought I would attend the HDC consultation though as it would do no harm and lo and behold, this has totally swung me the other way. During the assessment, it was gauged that my donar area could take a minimum of 3200 grafts, which was a healthy amount I was informed. It was suggested that these grafts should be utilised on the reinforcing the hairline; the front triangle and the top of the scalp towards the crown. Contrary to what I wanted to hear, it was pointed out that it could potentially be best to leave the crown area for the time being due to the number of grafts available. This all seemed to make sense. The atmosphere and friendliness of the gentleman I met was simply grade A.

So here I am. I am virtually 98% certain that I am going to go for a HT but the other concerns are still lingering. Your thoughts and advice would be greatly appreciated? Should I perhaps insist on some 'boosting' of the crown area if I do go for the plunge? BHR have also entered my radar and I am awaiting a consultation with those guys; it will be interesting to hear their response. Any other suggestions on effective strip method surgeons/clinics within europe?

Sorry to go on somewhat, but I just wanted to best summarise my current predicament. I have attached a few pics below.

Cheers

Hi David

I for one would say that you should wait as long as possible before having an HT.. Its all about how you feel about your hairloss (sorry, that may seem like a silly thing to say as I do understand it must be bothering you). You do not mention Propecia/ fin.. have you considered this as an addition to your current regime ?

Propicia is definitely something you should think about, there are articles on here about it.. and if you decide to give it a go, do it sooner rather than later.

I could write pages about the ifs,and buts of an HT... first and most importantly.... do your research on the best surgeons.... are you considering having an HT here in the UK or going abroad.. though its a "hot topic" I would only recommend surgery abroad... there are plenty of options.... please do not let travel put you off having an HT abroad.... dont forget that you are stuck with the end result for life !!

I am an HT repair patient, having had an HT in the UK by a clinic in London over 15 years ago... then having to get the mess they left me with fixed in the USA.

Sorry, I did not mean to stray from the topic... but I hope this helps....

As for having an HT now... I think that at your age then you would have to resign yourself to the fact that you will have to get more in the future....

To sum up, knowing what I do my advice would be to get on propecia asap and wait as long as possible before having an HT...

Thanks for your response Timuk.

From what I've researched, the UK isn't the greatest at the moment for hair transplants. The HDC I'm looking at is located in Cyprus. The results and feedback that I've seen looks very impressive.

I have heard propecia does the trick for a number of people so I may give it a shot. I am very interested in undertaking a HT still. Surely if 3100-3500 grafts are used on the frontal areas, these will not require further treatment in the future?

Hey david

Imo with strip i would only leave smg or h&w touch my head they are the absolute best, nothing against hdc they do great fue,i havent seen many of their strip results when compared to smg and hw so to say they wont do a top job i dont know but i for one would be very nervous getting strip off anyone who is not the absolute best at it.

Hi David

With regard to the "frontal areas"... yes I guess no more work would be needed....but.... I would think its hard for even the best surgeons to predict how "bald" a patient will go..

As for me, I had my repair done in the frontal area but have noticed that I am thining a bit at the sides, its not that bad... but I could see the frontal area becoming almost an island of hair, not sure I can explain it any better than that...

I know its a hard decision to make, I just think that its impossible to say that "just one hair transplant will do"....

Just my opinion on the subject, maybe others could add their comments regarding this

As I pointed out above, I'm already taking Regaine, however, after reading various bits n bobs on here and combined with advice gained from consultations, I've decided to start using propecia.

Do you think I should utilise both or move over to the propecia solely? It is going to be rather expensive to maintain both!

I think you probably wait another 12 months and see if propecia and regaine combo can stabilize your hair situation. At that point it would be wise to re-evaluate.

If you can try and use both, using Regaine just once aday would half the cost ? I only used Regaine before bed time, and not twice a day as it says on the instructions.... repeating myself, but Janna has mentioned that once a day seems to be ok... but worth while checking this...

Am going back on Regaine as soon as the stuff turns up !! Ordered last week and should have been here by now :-(

I get my Proscar from Dr Ashcroft, £150 for 18 months supply... but I do believe that you can go to your own GP and maybe able to get it much cheaper.... not 100% sure about this but I know I have read it somewhere on here...? worth a try maybe ?????

Timuk, what is proscar? Is that the same as Propecia?I've just paid £100 odd for a 3 month supply of propecia, which I'm thinking could be perhaps too much?!

Interesting point about taking the Regaine once a day. I'd be more likely do so so in.the morning. Does anyone else use Regaine once rather than the advised twice a day? Any noticeable differences?

David..

I have pasted below what I posted in the MEDS section to another member of the forum...

have a read through the meds sedtion about Regaine and Propecia / Fin...

PROSCAR will save you a lot of money... like I said, have a good read through that section, it will give you some good advice...

""Propecia is just the brand name for the original med... buying this is more expensive than buying Proscar... they both contain the same "hair saving" ingredients but Proscar is a bigger tablet that you have to cut into 5 equal "ish" bits and take piece a day... as for Propecia, this comes in daily tablets.

Propecia is packaged and sold as a "hair" treatment and is more costly....whereas Proscar is sold as a drug for prostate trouble !! But, again, they are one and the same thing.

So, Proscar is not a generic version.... just a bigger tablet that comes with the aggro of slicing it up (not always easy)

There are generic versions of Proscar which I think Dr Ashcroft offered to me at a lower price... I assume that they are identical and no less effective... but I went for the original... that was just my choice as I always prefer the original whatever I buy... just like painkillers.. Neurofen instead of a cheaper brand... which probably do the same thing but at half the price........ I was the same with Regaine.... its just a personal choice..

Anyway, Pacman.. like I mentioned before... my advice would be to start sooner rather than later..

All the Best

Tim

I hope that the above is right.... am 99.9% sure from what I have been told and read.. maybe someone else can confirm this as I am no Doctor... though I will be calling Dr Ashcroft soon for another batch as running a bit low... so will check this out with him...""
