Stop finasteride before surgery?

Hi,

I have been advised by my surgeon than I should stop taking finasteride one week prior to surgery. I have been taking for 8 years so am a little concerned about stopping even if it's only for a week!

I couldn't find any information on this when searching so just wondered if anyone has experience with this or know's why it's important?

Why have they advised that?

There's no need to stop finasteride as far as i'm aware unless it's topical.

I've heard of this before, but it was a mistake made by the patient as they misunderstood. You absolutely need to get clarification from your clinic. It is usually minoxidil that patients need to stop taking, and it is usually two weeks at least, not one week.

The pre op information says this:

“Stop taking Finasteride and/or minoxidil in order to optimise the hair repair cycle for surgery”

Ask them why this is and how finasteride causes problems.

They usually want you to start before surgery.
