Types of hairloss

Hi - I am a 38 year old woman from the UK and has suffered from thinning hair for as long as I can remember.
Ironically, as a child (from around 8 yrs to 10 yrs of age) I used to pull my hair out and when it grew back it was great and felt confident. I was told it was due to anxiety and is quite common. However, after a few more years I noticed the hair on top of my head was thinning (from the age of 17 years). I used to blame myself for this but was told it wasnt. The thinning has become worse over the years. Its thinning only on the top and around my temples.
I have tried everything and paid 100's of pounds for treatments which have done absolutely nothing.
I will never forget a doctor at my old surgery who was kind of mocking me about my request for help to stop the thinning and said "dont you think if there was a cure, I would have tried it by now?"
Since then I have been diagnosed with an underactive thyroid - as a result of a number of tests I had - from other doctors trying to get to the bottom of it. Despite this medication - the problem hasnt improved. I have tried nioxin, regaine, coal tar etc etc etc. I do have psoriasis on my hair but not in the area thats thinning, so I dont think this is the cause. I use a thick gel on my hair prescribed to me recently by a dermatologist - who I am hoping will really help me (after all these years, I really do hope so!). He wants to get to the bottom of my psoriasis but I just want him to help with the thinning as I can manage the psoriasis.
The scary thing is - not knowing how bad it will get. I think all sufferers like myself know the depression and the anxiety that comes with this. I have never felt confident in the way I look because of my hair. I would love to walk in the wind and the rain, without having to hold my hair in place for the fear of being noticed.
I am hoping this forum will help....

H Skyfall,

It sounds like you have number of issues going on. It makes sense to get to the bottom of it like your Derm suggests. Then consult with few ht clinics to see if they can help. Good luck.

Hi and welcome to the forum.
I'm sorry to hear of your predicament, your Thyroid could be the underlying cause of your problem, how long have you been taking the Thyroid meds and have they stabilised it.

Have you tried using a concealer to disguise the thinning areas as this may help you out until you find out the problem.

Take care.

Hair loss may occur due to many forms. Here is the most common list:
Androgenic : For males, it is also called as male pattern baldness.
Alopecia Universalis : The whole loss of all scalp and body hair.
Alopecia Totalis : The whole loss of all scalp hair.
Traction Alopecia : It is caused due to high tension.
Chignon Alopecia : It commonly occurs when the hair is styled in a tight bun.
Folliculitis : It is one of the most common types of skin infection.
Alopecia Areata
Marginal Alopecia
Ophiasis

Your hair loss sounds as if it is the type known as male pattern baldness (i.e. receding hairline and a bald patch developing). In men, this is linked to me male hormones, androgens. In women, it is unclear whether hormones do play a part. It is often an inherited tendency, especially in women.

The most practical solution to hair loss is to take the oral contraceptive pill, Dianette, which blocks the male hormones (androgens) and so can help prevent further hair loss. If you cannot take the pill for some reason (e.g. because you have had a thrombosis) or you prefer not to, you could try minoxidil (Regaine) lotion, available over the counter. You have to keep using it or any hair regrowth tends to fall out again, which can prove very expensive.
Hair Loss Treatment Options

If you are approaching the menopause then you may want to consider HRT which may halt the process and restore some hair thickness. A blood test will not tell you much but can let you know whether you are approaching the menopause despite regular periods. If no particular cause is found, advice from a skilled hairdresser is best. There are many commercial sources of help with hair loss problems but you need to be a little sceptical and careful before spending lots of money on untested or unproven wonder cures.
