Hello my name is Peter i am new so be patient with me. Looking online at various clinics to try and gauge the costs of surgery and i have noticed some are quoting in Hairs, some are quoting in Grafts and some are quoting in Follicular units. Would someone be able to explain what the differences are and what grafts and follicular units actually are please.

Follicular units are 2, 3 , or 4 hairs in one root . Grafts are the same. ( in medical terms it can also be a piece of tissue , think of a graft transplant to somebody who had a burn for example )
Hairs means the single hair as only 1.
All the top doctors and clinics quote in grafts/ follicular unit. It would be unusual to be quoted in hairs.

Hi Bandit, it´s a good question that is often overlooked.

As @PaddyIrishman1 says a follicular unit is a natural group of hairs 1-4. The norm is to keep these intact with a modern hair transplant and distribute them over the area of hair loss. Singles along the hairline for a soft refined natural look and then the multiple hair follicluar units make up the bulk to give the hair density. A graft can also be this, a natural, intact follicular unit but it doe not have to be. As said, it is a term used to describe a simple piece of skin tissue.

Ideally a graft and follicular unit should be the same but it is important to qualify this before you make any decision as results will massively vary. If a graft is simply to denote a hair then 2000 grafts is simply 2000 hairs. Opposed to a clinic that uses intact follicular units when 2000 grafts can indicate 2000 follicular units with a mix of 1-4 hairs in each, with an average hair count of 2.4 hairs per graft. 4800 potential hairs opposed to only 2000 will make a hug difference to the distribution of the grafts and the overall result.

Check what a clinic means when the term graft is used. Intact follicular units should be used for your hair transplant with a good mix of 1-4 hairs distributed to achieve the best result. You should be able to request your graft and hair count after your procedure also.
