Woman with thin patches of hair

I am a 50 year old woman with alopecia diagnosed as male pattern baldness (but it does not involve receding hairline). It has not responded to Regaine or to Spironalactane. I first noticed it after swimming in my early 20's when my children were tiny. It is stable, but I am less and less able to cope with it as I get older. I comb my hair and kid myself that I look okay, but if I see my reflection later or in a photograph, I see my ears through my thin side bits, and I know that it is the same on the top. I am tempted to go the FUE route, but it feels wrong to spend so much, when other people are struggling to pay the bills. And a silly aside, how do we deal with regular colouring our hair, over the approach and grown on periods of such treatment?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

From the research i have done its usually 2-3 months post op when doctors say its safe to colour your hair, they also say try to use a dye that does not contain Amonia. There are lots of natural ingredient dyes available now so thats not a problem.

Have you had any consultations with doctors.if so how many grafts were recomended.

Regards Bm.

Hello BM

I have my first consultation booked for the end of this month, so I can tell you then about graft nos. Thank you for your welcome and your interest. I have a feeling that the decision to go for it financially is going to be a biggie, as it feels a bit like a kick in the teeth for those who are struggling, especially those near to home.

WW,

I'm sorry that you're suffering through hair loss. If you do have a procedure, any reason in particular why you're leaning towards FUE instead of strip procedure? The biggest draw for FUE is that you can shave your head shorter. Female patients tend to grow their hair long enough to cover over the scar line so they go with strip.

As for coloring...we recommend our patients to use Natural Instincts (no harsh chemicals) several months after surgery. You can color right up to your surgery date. Good luck with your consultation.

WW before you travel down the road to hair transplantation I would suggest cleaning up your diet for 1 year and then evaluate again. Make sure to take before pictures if you do. In fact why don €™t you post some pictures here? Have you considered using a concealer as it would be ideal for your type of hair loss. If you take a look at my thread €œFollow my major repair € you can see for yourself the drastic difference a concealer can make. No need to go through the whole thread just the last couple of pages. I use Prothik, it €™s easy to apply and is water proof. If you apply it to the scalp with the hair wet and then let your hair air dry or blow dry you will be astounded.

Also have you considered PRP therapy as it seems to be ideal for your type of hair loss, might be worth the small cost as opposed to hair transplants.

I will just post a couple of pictures here so you can see what concealer can do.

BTW the subject of nutrition can be even more confusing than the world of hair transplantation. For instance the phytates in soy can block mineral absorption like zinc along with being an endocrine system disruptor which is connected to hair loss yet the average person honestly believes soy is some type of health food. So it does take and extensive amount of reading to get at the truth and this is only one example.
