I actually knew fairly early on I wanted to have the procedure done at Medikemos. Dr Lupanzula previously worked in Glasgow and I’d heard he had a great reputation which was confirmed by the Joe Tillman YouTube series which praised the quality of his results and his ethics.
I’d booked a consultation with Dr L in 2016 in London (I was 24) where he actually refused to carry out the transplant as I hadn’t receded enough. I’m a bit of a perfectionist and it seemed glaringly obvious to me I needed it done but everyone around me agreed with Dr L so I decided to wait it out. That confirmed to me I wanted to go to Medikemos as how easy would it have been for him to take my money?
2019 came around and I continued to recede to the point I really noticed it in pictures and when looking in the mirror. Even still, those around me didn’t see it and advised I didn’t have it done but by that point I was all for it.
I recontacted Medikemos and was contacted by Scott M who to be honest has absolutely insane results. Looks like he’s never had a hairloss worry in his life! We spoke on the phone and on WhatsApp and I really admired his honest approach. I really liked his response when I asked him how sore the procedure was :- “ any pain is very minor but a hair transplant is not something I’d want to do every day from a convenience perspective”. Very honest.
I actually needed someone to really push me over the edge and not put the procedure off and Scott objection handled my questions well so I booked for December 9th 2019. Oddly enough you stop scrutinising your hair to the extreme when you’ve got the procedure booked as you’re doing something about it.
I arrived in Brussels on Sunday 8th December and was completely surprised to realise I had no nerves about the procedure. Was fully expecting a sleepless nights and worry about the pain. These two videos normalised the procedure for me as you see the anaesthetic being injected and they aren’t exactly wrything about in their seat. The below didn’t have it done with Dr L.
Just a side note on pain. That was my main concern with the procedure. If you are worried about it my advice would be this:
In an 8 hour procedure I was lucky if there was 1-2 minutes of cumulative pain. The only minor pain is the first time local anaesthetic is injected into each area. Dr L tells you when and where he’s going to inject so you know in advance. If you tense up and move about I have no doubt it will add to the pain. On the pain scale I’d say the injections are about a 3 at most and I have a very low pain threshold. Just breathe through it, realise it will be temporary and give the stress ball a wee squeeze. Literally no more painful than getting numbing injections at the dentist. For the rest of the procedure there is absolutely zero pain however Dr L is happy to administer more anaesthetic if you need it and as you’re pretty much numb already you won’t feel the additional injections.
Procedure Summary
- Arrive at 6.30am (Dr L looked suspiciously awake for this time but he advises he has cold showers every day)
- Blood Tests (if you haven’t did them already)
- Local anaesthetic followed by graft removal on the back of the head
- Incisions for grafts on top of head
- Tech’s put in grafts on top of head while you watch Netflix
Overall Experience
I could not recommend Medikemos highly enough. Dr L is a totally down to earth guy and is happy to put any of your worries at ease. He gave me his personal number to phone if I had any problems in the two weeks after the procedure. In terms of professionalism, medikemos exceeded my expectations. The set up of the clinic is fantastic and there is such a big focus on patient comfort and infection prevention. Only the most modern of equipment is used. The whole thing felt so routine and you can tell Dr L is an expert in his field. Scott the Patient Liaison Manager is fantastic as well and it really helped he’d had the surgery done with Dr L. Seriously, check out his results, I’m sure they’ll be on here somewhere. Then when I finished up, Sandra talked me through post-op, payments etc. I’d indicated on the forms I was happy with 1800 grafts however on the day Dr L did 1890 grafts and didn’t charge me for the rest as “it’s approaching Christmas”. I mean come on, what amazing service. The technicians used to implant the grafts were also super professional and really easy to get on with.
The procedure does take a while but I suppose I’d rather someone took their time than rushed through it!
