6000 FUE by Hattingen

Hi all, I am 39-year-old, with hair loss that began some nearly 15 years ago or more. I had just over 6000 grafts done in a two-day FUE session at Hattingen in Switzerland. The choice of clinic for me personally was an easy one. I always liked Dr Mursanu's no BS approach and long term planning. I initially thought I would do FUT but was also given the choice of FUE. From what I know, Hattingen can be selective with big FUEs. I was told I had an above average donor and could choose either method. Dr Muresanu suggested FUE (which I favoured anyway).

The Hattingen clinic is in a small village in Switzerland, some 30 min drive from Zurich and close to German border, very discreet, beautiful modern house with a view. The procedure took two days, very long days, with a whole team engaged and led by Dr Laura Muresanu, Dr Sever's wife. From what they told me, and from what I could see coming in for regular post-op hair wash, that week there were three patients including me, two two-days and one one-day procedure.

Starting with the most difficult aspect of it; it’s having to stay in one position for long periods of time during the extraction phase. Short breaks are allowed but soon after, after half an hour or so, you start feeling stiff again. Otherwise, the procedure was, as I or anyone else who did their research, as expected. No surprises there. I don’t know how other clinics work, but the whole Hattingen team works like a Swiss clock. Lunch and snacks were also provided. I stayed in the area close to the clinic for ten days. Personally, it was important for me to have the post-op contact live, rather than be far away and consult via messages, phone, or a camera. Swelling was quite extensive, as is expected after 6000 grafts and a two-day procedure. I was given a post-op kit for self-care including written out explanation of post care and some tips for expectation management. Hattingen team washed my hair every day from day one for about ten days. In the first few days after washing, they would put non-adhesive pads on which I was to keep moist with saline solution (later with water) and a bandana over it. With a doctor’s OK, I would pull over a loose hoodie over the bandana to look less conspicuous After five days, I was told I don’t need non-adhesive pads, no bandana, I can sleep normally, and I can wear a loose hat when I go out if I want to. Below are some pics pre-op, post op and 11-12 days later. Shedding already began in the second week. First I didn't notice any hair shedding, but when they told me at the clinic that some of the transplanted hair already fell out, I started noticing it too in places, on t-shirt, pillow, etc., tiny little hairs. Now its the waiting game.

Thanks for reading. Hope this helps someone.

This looks as though you will end up with a full head of hair when it all grows. Hattingen work always looks impressive.

That´s a very large FUE. Looks clean after, will be great to see you progress. Who does what with FUE at the clinic, the Dr punches the grafts? must be motorised I assume to get those numbers over two days. Best wishes with your growth.

Its all done manually. The Dr does the punches and the extraction. Technicians then join in for implantation, so there would be at one point two-three of them simultaneously implanting, with two other passing the grafts over to them from where the grafts are prepared by yet two or three (can't remember) other members of the team. Its a big team and quite impressive how they work together. They were indeed two long days though.

Hi Florence, welcome to the forum.
I can imagine how long both days must have been. Laying and sitting in one position for long periods of time does take it out of you but it’ll be worth it once these grafts are growing. 6000 is a very big Fue procedure. The placement looks good, nice and refined. I like the hairline and temple peak design.
At 12 days the healing looks to be going well. Donor looks good.
Are you on any hair loss prevention regimen?
Thanks for sharing your story. I’ll be sure to follow your progress.
All the best.
Bm.

I would ask them about Finasteride and possibly oral minoxidil. I’m only on Finasteride, it’s worked wonders for my crown.

Hi Florence. How has everything healed? Things should be back to pre op by now.

Hi @Bigmac thanks for asking. Yes, everything is healing fine. I am experience some pimples/acne in the donor area, they come and go, but other than that all is fine. Properly in the ugly-duckling phase. I am not looking at it often with the gratest of detail, and not taking pictures as I find it easier just to ignore it for now. I had a buzz cut at Hattingen a month after my HT, and prefer to keep it really short as the difference between the native hair and transplanted hair is less obvious. Will have another one in a week or two. The recepient area is still red on ocassions, depending on the outside temperature, I think. Sometimes its less red, sometimes more. But, I read the redness stick around for a while especially after a mega session like mine.
Some of the transplanted hairs grew in length, I see it along the hairline, some shed and some just sit there being tiny, not growing, not shedding. I suspect these will fall out eventually when the follicule starts product "real" hair? I hope they aren't preventing new "real" hairs in their growth. What do you think?

Hi Florence. It`s good to hear everything is healing well. The ugly duckling stage can be a little rough but shouldn’t be too bad for you keeping your hair short. The redness can flare up at different times. Some weeks it may be gone, then appears again. It’s quite normal, just try not to scratch it.
The transplanted hairs that aren’t growing will be stalled hairs. These are the shed hair shafts that are just sitting in the scalp. They usually fall out while washing or as you mentioned, when a new hair begins to grow. They won’t prevent new growth. You can pull them out with tweezers without any resistance.

I`m attaching the image of your stalled hair that we chatted about via private message. It will help others who have similar concerns.

Your hair is looking very good. What’s the hairline look like close up?

Thanks.
It looks great, I am happy with the outcome so far, the density, hair direction, how natural it all looks. I always used to let my hair fall down my forehead which I wanted to do post hair transplant.
I guess Dr Sever and Dr Laura took that into account.
