Hello people,

I’ve been taking finasteride since 2020 at a dosage of 3mg per week. In 2021, I had an FUE hair transplant and have been using topical minoxidil consistently As well as finasteride since then.

Recently, I’ve noticed my hair thinning again. Could this be a natural progression because finasteride only slows hair loss rather than stopping it entirely? Or could it be related to my dosage—perhaps I should have been taking 1mg daily instead?

I’d appreciate your thoughts on this.

Br,

Herbert

Hello @HR1986. it could be a combination of both, a lower dose and progressive hair loss. The recommended dose is obviously 1mg per day, while clinics occasionally say less can be taken it´s often after a period of taking the correct dose, then dropping down slowly to maintain the general effect. However, it´s impossible to say how effective it has been for you, maybe your loss would have been much greater if never used. Assuming general health has not deteriorated, and no other medications have been taken that may have hair loss as a side effect.

Thanks for the swift response UH.

I got side affects when first started finasteride on the recommended dose. I think I'm gonna increase the dose to 4-5mg per week and see how city goes after 6 months.

Hi, re side effects, sorry, I meant if you have been taking any other meds that may have hair loss as a side effect. But with Finasteride, if they occur again, obviously reduce the dose. If fine, 6 months is a decent timeframe. Keep an eye on any areas of thinning so you can gauge any change for the good or hopefully, not bad. Good luck.

Maybe consider dutasteride? It seems to be well tolerated in those who suffer fin sides and is a more effective medication.

Upping to 1mg per day is what I’d do if in your position. If no sides, then give it at least 6 months. If it doesn’t work, then consider Dut.
You could take Dut once or twice per week with the fin dosage you’re currently on.

Thanks Bigmac for your feedback. I've made the decision up the dose to 5mg of finasteride per week. As mentiomed, I experienced a few side effects from the 7mg per week. I hope the 5 mg does the trick. I'll keep u updated in 6 month's.

If you wanted you could also try adding in oral minoxidil along side your finasteride

Yeah, that did cross my mind but I'm trying to take the least amount of pills. I'm totally fine with using the Minoxidil foam once a day.

Look at your vitamin D levels. Lack of it can cause hair loss.
