Are hair transplant not meant for bald people?

Or are they just meant for Norwood 2,5 with a vanity problem? that's a question that strikes me browsing through the results topics. Plenty of NW2,5, even NW1,5 getting hair transplants while under dangerous hormonal medications. OK they're not dangerous if you think so, but I believe one should not take hormone disrupting drugs for the sake of stopping hair loss. My family doctor and my dermatologist have voted against it for me as they said it was not worth the risk, and I'm glad they did.

I think people are considered bald at NW4 and above. Yet these cases are a minority in the transplants results forums. As a matter of fact, they're often turned down by surgeons. I understand that at least 40 hairs per cm ² are needed to yield a natural hair look. But I currently have less than 10 (!) hairs per cm ² (equally distributed with no recession) on my NW5 region and I would be absolutely thrilled if I could only stay like that forever, we all know that it will not be the case and that those hairs will depart sooner or later. My point is that not everyone wants a perfect NW1 thick full head of hair when it comes to getting a FUE or a FUT.

Most people NW4 plus, generally tend to be a bit older. Say in this instance 35+. Maybe people in this age group are not as keen to document themselves on the internet as patients that are younger.

Good point, I know a lot of 40+ people that are embarrassed by their baldness yet, they don't know where to look to treat it.

A lot of people 40+ also probably are still of that generation of that treating your hairloss means that you are insecure, feminine and that you should just man up and accept it.
Look at the guys in the 60s, 70s and even the early 80s when there were no hairloss treatments.
Having a shaved head virtually meant that you were right wing and people would cross over the road to avoid walking past you.
You can understand why some people sported some of the most artistic combovers you could ever imagine.
Thankfully the social stigma of baldness has changed a lot since then.
I think also a lot of people 40+ are still unaware of what FUE can do for you and if they decided to opt for a hair transplant they are more than likely to respond to a newspaper/magazine advert than do careful research on the internet.
And that must be music to the ears to some cosmetic surgeons who attempt to do a bit of FUE on the side and his/her Technicians who would normally work behind a desk.

Although a lot of people may consider a HT is a sign of vanity. I would not consider having a hair transplant as a sign of vanity.
Times have changed so much these days. We live in an image conscious society. Looking after yourself is part of life.
Absolutely a hair transplant is to improve your looks, but then so is styling your hair with wax or wearing designer clothes.
I think the dictionary translation of vanity needs to be amended for the 22nd century. lol

Someone willing to do a transplant to go from NW2,5 to NW1 is vain. Someone willing to do a transplant to go from NW5 to NW2 just wants to look normal (for his age).

No, it's vanity regardless of your NW level, but it's fine if either of those groups want to do that.

Anything can be considered vanity. Buying a big boat, big house, expensive car etc €¦ €¦ €¦..it €™s even more vain than hair in my opinion. The last thing anyone should worry about is if another feels you are being vain because you care about how you look as they are the first with the quick quip about your fat ass, bald head or whatever. It just becomes a means of them feeling better about themselves by trying to make you feel bad about yourself.

One needs to be completely informed on what a hair transplant can achieve and have realistic expectations. Sometimes it €™s just wiser to turn back the clock 5 years or so instead of trying to achieving a 20 year turn around. If you are a young guy with plenty of hair you have to understand the numbers and the implications of your choices today and how they will affect your future. If you can work the numbers out on paper with future hair loss entered into the equation and it makes sense than it could very well be a good decision, otherwise it might be best to do nothing.
