Best surgeons for curly hair? Feeling stuck.

Hi all, been stalking this forum and others for some time, but I’m really stuck at this point - I have been researching for over a year.

My aim is to get an FUE transplant early next year. I’m a NW2. I’m of mixed ethnicity (half black), curly hair. I’m really struggling to find patient posted results that resemble my hair type, only really seeing results on straight hair.

The same doctors names keep getting mentioned when I’ve asked this question on a different forum, but somehow nobody can link me to any actual results. I’ve seen a few patient posted results on afro hair but these have not turned out great. (Note: my hair isn’t fully afro as I’m only half black)

As much as I respect the opinions of members of the community, I feel a bit uneasy about booking surgery with a doctor purely based on their reputation / people telling me they’re really good with curly hair.

If anyone can link me to any results on curly hair I’d really appreciate it, also any advise would be good. I am in contact with a few clinics so hopefully can obtain some results from them, but I know they’re super busy so might not happen. Unfortunately most results on their websites are on straight hair.

Note: I’m UK based so ideally will have my HT in Belgium.

I would reach out to the clinics in Belgium you’re considering and ask them if they have examples of mixed race hair transplants. There are a few results on here if you search curly. I know Westminster clinic have been doing surgery with the U graft which is specialised for curly haired grafts.

Hello, to add a little technical aspect to curly hair. Regardless of technique, curly hair carries complications. From either the extraction or cleaning and slithering of the grafts. FUE the graft can curl round like a corkscrew. As a result, the exit point of the hair from the skin versus the position of the hair follicles under the skin is harder to estimate. In some cases, the hair follicles can lay almost directly vertically. Whereas in some cases the hair follicle can lay at a more acute angle to the skin. Making the initial punches at least a test. To gauge the underlying position of the hair follicles. As this often alters. Dependent on the area of the scalp. To keep the transection levels to a minimum. This can also apply to the depth of the hair follicles. Consequently, the FUE punch size may need to vary. To ensure no damage occurs to the hair follicle being removed. But also to not damage the surrounding hairs.

Not a rule, but certainly on average. Curly hair can have a lower-than-average hair density around the scalp. Ironically the curl often makes up for the lower hair density. As the curl adds the look of greater hair fullness and body. That said, the real-time lower hair density needs to be considered when planning hair restoration. Treating lower Norwood stages must consider if the hair loss pattern advances. Will the donor be able to safely maintain natural hair coverage and density?
