You're taking 6 months off from going to the gym, why?

Hi Janna

BHR recommend 3 months away from lifting weights to avoid scar stretching.

I went past the 3 month mark on Jan 3rd, but am extending it a bit.

I've directed the energy I used to spend at the gym and cycling into walking. So far, I've covered about 420 miles and worn out 2 pairs of shoes.

Hi Modenese

Sounds like you've been really positive and that is a lot of walking! Well done.

Hi Guys

Thanks for the encouragement, particularly about the shockloss. It was hard to take, and it made a difference.

I'm 4 calendar months to the day out, and just back from a haircut. Although not buzzed, my hair IS VERY SHORT at the moment.

Some really great things have happened in the last 4 weeks:

- I can wear my hair short without derrmatch, and the scar is not visible. The right side is amazing, the scar has disappeared. The left side is not as good, but I can wear my hair very short and you can't see I've had anything done even in direct sunlight which at this stage is a nice position to be in.

- The transplants have started to grow. This began about 4 weeks ago. The growth is uneven, but it is definitely happening. Yield looks like it's going to be great.

It's been emotional. It's fair to say that I regretted the whole exercise for the first 3 months. If this seems odd, it's because although I didn't like balding, I didn't lose sleep over it either - I got on with my life. For the first 3 months I basically had nothing good. Shockloss, and a very red transplant area, was all I had.

For the past 4 weeks as the shockloss has faded, I've relaxed a bit.

For the past week I'VE HARDLY BEEN ABLE TO STOP GRINNING. It's sad really. Although it's early days, for the first time in ages I actually recognise the person I see in the mirror, rather than that bald-bloke imposter that was there before.

Photos to follow.

Left side, natural light

The left side is the weaker of the 2 side. However, that I can wear my hair so short at 4 months means a lot.

A few other comments:

My hair feels thicker all over my head, and better quality than I can ever remember. This is not imagination - I've got loads of pictures from the past 4 years or so and they all tell the same story.

My hair had always felt quite thin and flat. If I tried to grow it, it developed a poor texture and was impossible to look neat.

Now it feels smooth and thicker. Actually it feels like someone else's hair. Fantastic.

I made so many changes so I don't know what is responsible for this, but the changes I can think of are:

- Significant changes to diet. I had a very good diet before, have increased significantly the amount of the following foods I consume:

  • Nuts, particularly walnuts, Brazil nuts and almonds
  • Eggs, from 3 to 4 per week to maybe 2 per day
  • Green vegetables, including loads of Brussels sprouts, spinach, cauliflower, broccoli, green beans
  • Probably drinking 2 to 3 pints of whole milk per day
  • Doubled consumption of oily fish (usually mackerel)

- Food supplements

  • MSM tables (3000mg per day)
  • Biotin (10000mcg per day)
  • Cod liver oil (large dose)
  • Centrum advance vitamin tablets

Nail quality is improved also.

Hi Modenese

Thank you for updating and opening up on the reality of surgery.

The early days and especially for Strip patients is hard as you say, shockloss, redness, looking more bald than before etc are all initially a burden. Things get worse before better and this is where the role of an advisor really is needed to give information and encouragment especially in those darker days.

Now comes the easy part and really what you put yourself through all this for in the first place.

You are still early so we expect massive changes to come in all areas over time.

Really glad the whole regime has worked well in terms of diet and all. I am big on this aspect and do believe every little helps and seems you did a lot not a little and really commited to this in a big way.

Looking forward to the updates.

Looks like things are really coming in nicely! Congrats. It is a process that requires a lot of patience, but once you hit the point where you are now it is nothing but good things happening. The next few months will be amazing for you.

Hi Guys

Basically loving it. I'm at 6 months now, and I thought I'd post before I got my hair cut next week.

I don't have any gel or any hair products on in these photos so it's all natural.

I'm 48 years old, so have a lot of grey hair now. It looks like BHR spread the grey out, which has given an effect I like a lot, particularly on the hairline I wonder if this is this just a throw of the dice, or something that was intentional?
