A big thank you to Dr. Feller and to Spex. I m sorry I didn t write sooner but travelling and work hasn t given me the time to sit and write my sincere appreciation for you two and what you did for me. I told you I would write about you in the forums so that I can give back so I m making good today.
I live in the UK but my brother and I also have a house in Florida so I bounce between the two with my wife for work and pleasure. About a year ago I decided it was time to get a hair transplant. I visited a few clinics in London and in South Florida, but while I was doing that my wife was researching online. I thought the forums were just adverts and dismissed them, but my wife convinced me it wasn t by having me read patient stories and looking at photos.
It didn t take long to see the same names coming up again and again and again. Shapiro, Hasson, Feller, etc ¦ . So I took over from my wife and started researching as many posts as I could and decided Feller was the right one for me. Unfortunately, when I called his office I found there was at least a six month wait. I was disappointed, but then I realized there may be a good reason for having to wait. But I could get a consult within two months so I signed up. I flew to New York and met with Dr. Feller. What a truly charming and intelligent man. I felt at ease with him instantly. He kept running through the waiting room attending to his surgical patients apologizing for the wait and making sure I knew he knew I was waiting. Once he took me into consultation I had his full attention and the moment of truth was upon me. Was I a good candidate?
He spent a minute looking through my hair and then let me tell him my thoughts and desires. He listened intently and then told me the good news. That I was a good candidate and that my expectations were very realistic. He showed me pictures of other patients he had done who were similar to me in hair loss and age. Then he asked if I wanted to see an actual procedure being done. I was a bit nervous, but he made it seem so natural that I just followed his lead. We got up and went into the back where he was finishing one patient s surgery and half way through another patient s surgery. Both patients were very friendly and only too happy to talk to me. Let me tell you if you can do this do it because it makes the surgery seem so easy and safe. And let me also tell you all, the work looked beautiful. Nothing gross or frightening. And they had no pain except for being a bit stiff from sitting for a few hours which is not a big deal at all.
I had to wait seven months but finally had my procedure with Dr. Feller. In the meantime Spex answered all the little questions that arose quickly and in a way both my wife and I could understand. He also helped alleviate my nervousness as the time got a bit closer for my day. Thanks so much to you Spex.
My wife and I flew from Florida to Great Neck two days before my day. Unfortunately, my wife began to feel run down so she couldn t accompany me to Dr. Feller s for the procedure. I really wanted her to be there with me for the procedure but she needed to rest and I felt comfortable with Dr. Feller.
I went to the clinic at 7:30am and just as I put my bag down to wait outside the door Dr. Feller strolled in and said in a cheery voice good morning, let s get to work . He immediately put me at my ease. We went over the plan again in detail and he took quite a few pictures. He drew some lines and then took more pictures. I will post them here when he sends them to me. As this was happening about 9 people in surgical garb came through the door, these were the Feller Medical techs. All women by the way. When I was taken into the back I was surrounded by all these people and couldn t believe they were all here for ME! They told me they knew I was a bit nervous, which I was, and put me at my ease.
Dr. Feller came in and froze the back of my scalp which were a bit pinchy but very dealable. Then he just let me relax for a ten minutes at which time I checked in with my wife who was not feeling well. When Dr. Feller came back he started to remove the strip and it was totally and completely pain free. The worst part I anticipated for months was nothing to worry about after all. Dr. Feller was telling me jokes and even giving me a music quiz based on the songs playing on the radio. It was just a breeze. Then he put in staples that sound like a ratchet and that was it. Before I knew it, he was done and getting the frontal part of my scalp ready. He froze that too and proceded to make three thousand holes. I felt no pain. The girls were making my grafts and then they started to place them back into my head about an hour later. No pain whatsoever.
I called my wife at lunchtime and she was still not feeling well. I told this to Dr. Feller and amazingly he asked her to come in so he could check her out. I didn t think that was necessary so I told him I just felt she could sleep it off.
By 3:30pm I was finished and one of the nurses gave me my instructions and a hat. I met with Dr. Feller just before leaving and he took more pictures and sent me back to my hotel room. It was a great experience and I could see my new hairline and was very excited. When I got back to my room my wife was still sleeping. I woke her to see if she wanted anything to eat as she hadn t eaten all day. I was concerned but let her go back to sleep. By about 9:30 I checked on my wife and she clearly was running a fever and her throat hurt so much she couldn t speak or eat. I didn t know any doctors in New York except for Dr. Feller so I called him. Luckily he was still in his office. He graciously volunteered to come to my room and he examined my wife. About one second after looking at her throat he diagnosed a severe case of strep throat. He showed me all the white patches in the back of her throat and I got really worried and thought I should take her to hospital. But I think Dr. Feller read my mind because he said not to worry and that he would treat her in the room instead of bringing her to a noisy germ filled hospital. He left to go back to his office and then returned twenty minutes later with a doctor bag and bent wire hanger device. What s going on here? I thought to myself.
First thing he did was swab her throat with an anesthetic to ease the pain. My wife said the relief was miraculous and instant. Then he took out a syringe and injected my wife with penicillin. Then he pulled out some tubing and a bag of saline fluid and hung it from the bedboard using his wire hanger contraption he brought. Then he put an IV in my wife s arm and hooked it up to the tube. The whole thing was surreal. I could see my wife was feeling better because she was being taken care of, and I have to admit I started to feel much easier too. Dr. Feller told her to go to sleep. He then pulled out another syringe and told me to turn around so that he could inject my donor area because he knew all the worry was making me tense up and bring on pain. He was right as I was beginning to hurt. He injected the back and in seconds the pain was totally gone. He told me to get some sleep and that he would be back in the morning to take the needle out of my wife s arm and left. My wife was asleep by now so I went to sleep as well. Dr. Feller called me at 6:30 am to say he was coming to the room. My wife woke up and said she felt much better and that it felt like she slept for a hundred years. Dr. Feller knocked on the door, came in and removed the needle from my wife s arm and took away the tubing and the bag. He checked her throat and neck and did another swab of anesthetic. He then gave me some pills for her to take for the next ten days and then checked out the transplant. All was fine. I offered to pay him for the medical service he performed on my wife but he quietly refused and left.
I simply can t express my gratitude for what Dr. Feller did for my wife and me and we both want to thank him again from the bottom of our hearts.
