Dr. John Diep Medical Hair Transplant & Aesthetics for Afro Hair

Hello members.

Hoping some of you can offer some insight for Dr. John Diep of Medical Hair Transplant & Aesthetics.

I've seen him on other sites where the reviews are mixed, some good, some bad. My biggest concerns are how naturally his work is. Some pictures the grafts are uniform rows that look pluggy when grown out. Obviously, I would not want my hair to look like this, but other examples look good. I found on one site a popular You Tube patient say he was as bad as a Turkish hair mill.

I decided to ask on here to get some unbiased opinions.

My personal opinion is that he is someone I would not choose even if he paid me to have surgery with him.

I base it on the amount of reviews there is that is showing bad ethics, poor work etc. I would personally research other Drs.

From what I have seen, he always does vertical rows, there are some Drs who do sort of horizontal rows which can look good, you have Dr De Freitas, its his style to do a wavy horizontal front row and I think it looks good. Vertical rows never look natural or good in my opinion, from my view its just a lack of understanding or to save time.

IMO far too inconsistent to ever take seriously.

Diep is seemingly capable of doing solid work at least on patients with favourable hair characteristics, but given he works on two patients at the same time (taking a strip for FUT and also doing all the FUE extractions), his work seems to suffer for both. I've seen far too many poor FUT closures and far too many poor donor extraction patterns coming from this clinic. It's also worth mentioning Diep uniformly uses a 1mm punch which should be questioned given most in the industry work with 0.8mm-0.9mm. Larger sized punches are more likely to cause scarring and greater transection rates of surrounding hair follicles if they are not appropriately chosen for a patient.

In terms of hairline design you are right it can look pluggy. Diep's macrodesign is generally a zigzag (which might appeal or even suit some patients) but the manner in which the incisions are placed resemble a cornrow which is why your observation about his work is completely valid. Ironically Diep himself has written on his website not to do as part of his "7 rules for dense hair". Hair should be placed randomly or interlocked to create the greatest illusion of density, so why Diep continues to do this I am not certain.

Given your name i assume you have afro hair, so if it were me id probably be wanting to consult with Bisanga and Mwamba; afro hair is typically harder to extract for FUE so you want someone to do it right.

I think Diep is probably better than gambling on a random Turkish hair mill, but he is still very overrated regardless.

There is another hair transplant forum I frequent where many of Diep's patient reviews end up getting bad donors, bad angles, cornrow/vertical row implants - essentially bad work you wouldn't expect.

Yet for some reason Diep seems to get a pass on all this bad work. IMO he has really really good marketing and the patients who he has done good work on really are cheerleaders for him.

Essentially - just avoid him and go somewhere with more consistent results. Even if you want to stay in the US, I think there are better docs who are cheaper to boot.

Agree with @qui bono too. For Afro hair you really can't gamble on that or you will get burned. Its quite complicated. I would consult Bisanga and Mwamba

Great insight and valuable input guys that I appreciate. I think I will scratch him from my choices.

I do have Afro hair which I understand limits my choice with it being somewhat of a niche market with few who are experienced enough to remove grafts utilizing the FUE method.

For personal reasons I wish to stay within the US, and prefer to use a resident US doctor which eliminates Bisanga and Mwamba. Another I've been considering is Dr. Umar who specializes in Afro hair, but finding recent patient documented results is proving difficult.
Do you have any thoughts on Dr. Umar?

you should still see about Dr. Mwamba. He is a Belgian doctor but actually lives in Atlanta. He operates in Atlanta, Brussels, and Princeton, NJ. I actually had surgery with Mwamba in Princeton myself at the beginning of this month.

I have heard of Dr. Umar's name but personally don't know enough about him to comment one way or another.

Mwamba operates in New Jersey and Atlanta. Bisanga also occasionally does consults in the US. You might also want to do a consult with Shapiro

Not a fan of Umar tbh. Ive seen some ok BHT cases by him, but also some outright botch jobs and how the patients were treated afterwards was troubling.

I think Diep is probably better than gambling on a random Turkish hair mill, but he is still very overrated regardless.
Id rather gamble with a Turkish mill tbh ... at least you wouldnt spend as much

Not a great positive towards Dr. Umar. Turkey is for sure out of the question, and Dr. Shapiro does not have any Afro FUE patients which rules him out. I was not aware Dr. Mwamba I was unaware of his surgical prescience within the US. He seems worthy of consideration if I can find recent patient case studies.

What about Dr. Jeffrey Epstein? How would you rate him?

Hello Afro Hair.

It`s good idea to ask clinics if they have patients you can chat with. Hopefully, they are decent stand up guys who will give a good account of their hair transplant.
I`ve seen results in person where the grafts have been planted in uniform rows, the result does not look natural at all. It may not be as noticeable with Afro hair, although the hairline is usually a giveaway when something does not look right. It sounds like you’ve already made your mind up Dr Diep is not for you. I see you mention Dr Epstein. I have met 2 of his patients a few years ago whose results were very good, however, I can’t say how good he is at Afro hair. I did take a look at his website which has a few examples.
With you wishing to stay within the US, Dr Mwamba is certainly worth reaching out to.I know he has many Afro patients.
A lot of clinics prefer to offer FUT to Afro hair patients because the curly grafts can be difficult to extract using FUE. Dr Umar you mentioned has the U graft which is supposed to be very good at extracting these grafts. One thing for sure, dark skin will show FUE scars more prominently. The smaller the punch a clinic uses the better chance of less scarring. Skill is required with smaller punches to prevent higher transections.
What is your hair loss situation? Are you on a hair loss prevention regimen?

Great, great, great decision. I am a Diep patient and am getting a repair in January of his work from July 2020. Though I am Asian and yielded well, his work is terrible and my donor has suffered irreparable harm.

If staying in the US, I would recommend Dr. Nader in Reynosa Mexico. You'd just have to get to McAllen TX and a driver will come to pick you up to take you the short distance over the border and back. Lots of results for Dr. Nader's work with afro hair can be found online.

@I_am_Doll_Grafts. Your user ID is straight to the point. Could you share your story on here so I can see what happened to you and follow your repair? It will also help Afro Hair.

I am new here. Just getting the lay of the land. Not sure which sub-forum to post my story in, yet. But yes, I have no problem sharing.

In the patient results but the repair forum might be the correct place. Or, post in both.:)

What is wrong with that hairline?

You mean aside from being ruler edge straight, pluggier than a Michael Bay movie, and..........

....................the doll's head weave pattern of graft placement leading to the see-thru effect?

That’s a poor aesthetic look that screams hair transplant. Too straight, multis in hairline. It does look like good yield though. I think you’d be able to have this sorted by a decent hairline doctor. Add singles in front and between the uniform pattern to break it up and add density.
Have you been quoted a fix for this?
