How common is it for women to loose a lot of hair during or after pregnancy, i know it happens and is hormone related usually but does it happen frequently?.....has anyone had any experience of this? and does it grow back fully eventually

I know someone who lost hair while pregnant, not enough to notice a thinned out look but enough to worry her, it all grew back so she is happy.

Its very common, and can even start up to a year after birth, but its usually reversible.

We know our hair has a natural cycle where it grows, rests and sheds. Apparently the rise of pregnancy hormones slows down the shedding part of the cycle, which means during pregnancy your hair will have never looked better. However all good things must come to an end and once hormone levels have returned to normal, so does the hair cycle and a few months after giving birth you will shed the hair you would do normally plus the hair you accumulated during the previous nine months. For most women, although you are technically losing hair, in reality it's returning to whatever your version of 'normal' is, hair-wise. The good news is that once your hormones have settled so will your hair, it just takes a bit of time. However, sometimes the fluctuation in hormones can mean you lose a little more than you would do normally and your hair starts to look a little thin.

It is called alopecia post partum and it is tellogen effluvium. It means that 1-2 months after giving birth (never during pregnancy) some women lose their hairs which fall into the telogen phase rapidly. This hair shedding lasts for 3-4 months and in most cases there is recovery and regrowth of the hairs without any specific treatment.

After pregnancy many women experience a loss of hair, this is caused many hair simultaneously entering the resting (telogen) phase. Within two to three months after giving birth, some women will notice large amounts of hair coming out in their brushes and combs. This can last one to six months, but resolves completely in most cases. This condition is caused by the hormonal changes that take place after a woman's body recovers from her pregnancy.c;;9

Hi - I have little knowledge about hair loss in pregnancy - but I have heared that some women do lose their hair after birth, as the pregnancy hormones subside - some regain their hair and there will be others that do not. See I told you I did not know much!!!

But whatever, you have done the correct thing by coming and posting on the site. You have already found that there are many people - young, old, male, female that deal with alopecia everday - so when you feel low - come here and read- also if you can find a support group they are great - there are some members ( cannot remember any names) from N Ireland - who may come forward.

Enjoy you baby and keep posting - hope the sun is shining in N lreland - fantastic here in London

take care

I gave birth three years ago but I'm still losing my hair. I also have a thyroid condition and I'm taking Euthyrox once a day so I'm quite confused of the reason of my hair loss.

In my desperation, I approached a hair doctor for my hair problem. I have not made a decision yet if I will go through with any hair procedure. I have been reading a lot about hair loss, though and I am going to start changing my diet. Also, I read that too much stress on the hair can also increase hair loss, so I have started wearing my hair down on in a loose pony tail if I absolutely need to tie it, so I don't stress my hair too much. I hope this helps and if anyone has more tips, please share here!
