Hair transplant 5 months feel like it’s falling out !!

I’m at 5 months after my transplant had really good growth up until 4 months now I seem to have hair fall from the transplanted hair some single hairs
Also had a scab come loose with a few hairs ?
Freaking out massively!!

Hi @Cymru1991, your growth for that time frame is good. Assuming no damage has been caused to the area in the past weeks. Obviously, hairs do shed during the growth process. But you are talking in a very specific area. There are no obvious signs from the post-op placement image, no bleeding or open wound from the newer images. It would be worth talking to your Dr if you have not already. Besides that good growth and hope it continues well for you.

Hi thanks for your quick reply. Ye I been happy with the growth up until now but worried it’s falling out again ….. does transplanted hair shed and re grown like normal hair ? With the hair that fell out with the spot / scab is that lost forever? The area where i have had patchy is where the spots was .

Hair grows in cycles, whether your existing hair or when it has been transplanted. The transplanted hair cycles can be interrupted due to the trauma of being removed and replaced. But over time they act no different. Shedding, laying dormant, and regrowing naturally. With respect to this specific area, it would be best to discuss it with your Dr. To feel calmer. I would send pictures to your doctor asking why the hairs have fallen out in that one location. Did that scab with the hairs fall off when combing or washing?

Looking at your pictures it appears you had growth in the area that now appears balder. Could you add a high resolution close up of that area?
The graft/hair picture you posted is just a scab with hair shafts attached. Was this from the area of of concern?
How many grafts did you receive?

Ye that’s exactly right! I had good growth but that area wasn’t as good as the right side then I had spots there so thought that must be the growth coming to through but then the Scabs / spots come out while combing and I haven’t had growth there yet but will keep an eye out just worried now x

Ye I have they are taking ages to reply ye while combing and showering there was a couple

It looks like Anagen effluvium which is an abnormal, rapid loss of hair in certain areas.

I would get it checked out because to me it looks like scarring.

Was going to say the same thing as Kevboy. The area is so isolated and so bald compared to the surroundings.

I’d ask both your doctor and a trusted hair specializing dermatologist whether they’d recommend a scalp biopsy in the bald area. It’s probably a good idea to get one if either of them suggest there could be a problem.

If you decide to get the area touched up in the future, it’d be good to rule out scarring alopecias as those cause even transplanted hairs to die out.

So this part that is a totally bald spot did grow intially?

Maybe you need to contact someone who can give you an evaluation and how to proceed. You might visit some reputable UK clinic like Dr Ball at the Maitland Clinic.

If it is scaring alopecia a Trichoscopic image can help confirm it.
It should be treated at very initial stages otherwise, it can process rapidly.
You may need something systemic like cyclosporine, mtx, azathioprine, oral steroids, etc to stop and treat the progression.

Reach out to the clinic as many times as required until their doctor helps you.
