Is FUT still a viable surgery for 1000+ graft patients?

Back when I was deciding what to get for my HT I was convinced by a lot in the industry to go for FUT due to the alleged benefits. In hindsight I regret being pushed in that direction as now I've got a big scar that I'm very self-conscious about when swimming and getting my hair cut.

If you can afford it I'd say look into FUE. FUT strikes me as the poor man's HT for 2013.

Well said. As they said to me at prohairclinic, FUT is easy money for the surgeons as it's easily and rapidly done. FUE is harder to perform.

I don't think FUT should still be practiced today.

Yet I still read nonsense like "FUE is only for 2% of hair loss sufferers".

In some countries, FUT is basically obsolete. Spain and Turkey have basically embraced FUE as the new method for hair transplantation. I do agree that FUT is much easier for surgeons than FUE. This could be why some have refused to utilize it to a noticeable degree. North America in particular still seems to push FUT whilst relegated FUE for small sessions or minor recession which is totally incorrect. Those that have stay predominantly FUT got comfortable with the good yield of FUT and don't want to risk bad results by switching to FUE but Lorenzo did it, Cole did it(in 2003), Umar never learnt FUT and went straight to FUE. Bisanga and Feriduni are basically 50/50 FUE and FUT and they are doing just fine. One day things will reach an equilibrium and very few people will want FUT and the surgeons that refused to learn it are going to be left behind or forced to learn it as the market dictates the method.

Best to go with the docs who know fue now, rather than the antiques that are forced to learn it

Great point. The ones that adapted to it early on are the ones that riskedd their reputations instead of just staying safe with fut.

I actually think fit will make a comeback in a few years. There's a lot of research going into healing /scarless healing (for burn victims etc)a lot more than hair multiplication. If they come out with a product that can make a scar legitimately invisible strip will make more sense since you can get more hairs

You may get more hairs out of strip but how do you combat the potential for permanent numbness? How do you combat the horror of a scar stretching? Or the change of direction in hair? Or the change of hair caliber and grouping gradation? FUT has so many drawbacks compared to FUE it is not funny. But FUT clinics will play on the negligible yield factor and that you can get more hair. Last time i checked, Lorenzo and Erdogan were restoring nw6s with FUE alone. If you claimed this years ago you would have been thrown in the nuthouse.Maybe FUT can be reserved for nw7s now.

not sure who it matters really, I just made a comment about what i read here

Just some of the posts were interesting to me in the way it was done, tempered but not to the point, like someone wanting to make a point, as if they had been hard done by, thats all.

Agony666, where did you go for surgery?

I don't think I can name surgeons, but he's one of the few North American surgeons that have a good reputation around these parts of the web.

I just don't think it's appropriate. The surgeon did a great job for me. My only regret is that I went for FUT instead of FUE. Irrespective of whatever pressure clinic reps may have put on me, at the end of the day it was my decision.

If the result was bad then believe me you'd hear about it :T:

I ´m not sure what you have said. Your doc did a great job for you. Then you say about pressure makes it sound like it is now and not about your result.

So you had FUT? and if it was bad " then believe me you'd hear about it" where do you stand, sorry it is confusing.

i get the feeling there is a real slant here, dont know enough yet but getting the hang of it

I don't know what's so difficult to understand: he had FUT and is is content with the result but would have preferred FUE in retrospect. I'm sure there are MANY guys in that position, thus why there are so many FUT scar repair patients.

Thanks for the response Agony!!

Mickey85, you seem to know your stuff, thanks for your comments.
