I was around 25/26 when I started losing my hair. At this time I was having a stressful time with my health but my fathers side of the family have also suffered with hair loss. After doing some of my own research I started using different shampoos to see if it would help. After this didn’t do much, I saw the adverts on TV for Regaine. I was hoping this was going to be my magical solution. Even though this did help my hair loss continued.
Like a lot of people my hair loss started at the back and gradually moved forward. As you can see from my pictures my hair loss was very significant. At first you don’t really notice it until that one friend or colleague points it out! (especially when it starts at the back) I remember looking in the mirror and thinking how much I hated it! I always felt my hair was a big part of my appearance and who I was as a person. As the hair loss got worse, I lost more and more confidence in myself. I way always asking myself ‘I wonder what that person thinks of my hair?’/ ‘do they think I look old because I am losing my hair?’ / ‘does that person find me less attractive because I don’t have my hair?’ / ‘what are they saying about it?’
Because of this I always felt less confident meeting new people, going to new sports clubs and would always look at my hair before a night out wishing it looked better. I also wore a lot of hats when I could to cover it up and hide it.
When I got to the Age of 32 I had broken up from a relationship and thought I am going to do something about my hair loss. After doing some research a family friend put me in touch with the ‘Farjo Hair Clinic’. After an initial chat with Mick he recommended that a hair transplant could potentially be possible, but I had to take some steps first. I learnt pretty quickly that the Farjo will be very honest with what they can achieve and it’s not just about a quick fix.
Firstly, I had to stabilise my hair loss. In order to do this, they recommend a twostep process. Finasteride is the first step I took and secondly, I decided to keep using the Regaine (Minoxidil).
Once I had taken the Finasteride for a six-month period my hair loss had started to slow and I took a trip to the clinic to see Mick and Dr Farjo. Fingers crossed they could offer me a hair transplant and give me hair again.
From the first moment you walk through the clinic doors you feel very welcomed and in safe hands.
Naively I am sitting there hoping this full head of hair is going to be offered. Dr Farjo is looking at my hair and says in total you are going to need about 4500 hair graft to cover your whole head and this is not possible in one go. We can give you a hair transplant, but it will have to be either the front or the back first and then you will need to comeback and see how you are getting on. Initially I was disappointed. I wanted to get a whole head of hair back instantly! The important point to take away here is the Faro Hair do things properly and are here to look after your hair for the rest of your life. They want your hair to look good when you are 50/60/70 not just for a few years in your 30s.
After some deliberation I decided to have the front of my head done first. My rational is everyone sees the font of your face first and I was hoping it would make me feel/ look younger. In total I had 2100 hair grafts implanted and I went for the FUE option. Even though on the day I was quite nervous the team where fantastic. They made me feel so relaxed I slept for most of the day while the transplant was being completed. In total the procedure took from about 7.30am to 7pm so it is a long day. The most asked question I get asked is did it hurt? The honest answer is not really. Sometimes it was a bit uncomfortable but for the majority your head just felt numb.
Once the procedure is complete there are no bandages. You are given a hat to wear and must keep your head clean for the first few days until your head fully heals with a spray. After 10 days the scabbing started to fall away, and it just looked like I had shaved my head.
Fast forward 8 months and my transplant is looking great. For the first 3/4 months not much growth happens but then for 12 months about 10% more hair grows each month. For me after 3/4 months I would say I noticed a big difference and felt great about the results.
With my hair growing in I feel much more confident and I feel like I look like my younger self. I can’t wait for even more hair to grow in! I could also start using hair product again to style it! I have also had so many positive comments from friends and family saying how good it is looking. Such a confidence boost!
The results have been so good I have now booked in for my second procedure 10 months after my first transplant. I can’t wait to get it done and see the results.
As you can see it is not a quick fix by the Farjo Hair Institute. They are there to look after you and your hair for the future. Once my second transplant is fully grown in it will have taken about 2 and a half years for the full process but seeing the initial results it will be fully worth it!
Please don’t go for the quick fix is my advice and do lots of research. Enjoy the process. Once I had taken control of the situation and contacted Farjo I felt I was in control of my hair loss and the team were there to guide me.
