Shedding of Hair after haircut with a tingling sensation

Hi All,

I am 26 years of age.
My hairline as of now has not receded. I recently had a hair cut (3 days ago to be exact) and suddenly I seem to feel an itchy feeling in my scalp and whenever I rub the area and very gently tug at my hair with my fingers, I am able to pull out 1 - 2 strands of hair. The part that is unnerving me is the tingling/itchy sensation followed by the hair strands that comes out when I pull my hair with a gentle force.

I have decided to visit a derm to get it checked but since I am in the midst of an exam preparation, I have put it on hold. This problem has caused me great anxiety and I am unable to prepare for my exams nor am I able to focus on daily activities.

This sensation started only after getting my hair cut and though I could pull out strands of hair before I never experienced any sensation in my scalp before.

I am preparing myself mentally for the only prognosis that can be (i.e) MPB.

I would just like to have all of your advice so that I could mentally equip myself to live my life without the follicles that adorned my head since my birth.

But I am totally crushed to the core.

Have you changed your shampoo recently as this could be the cause of irritation, as for hair coming out, it's natural for hair to shed and if you pull at it this help it along. As long as it's not coming out in clumps it sounds normal but visit a Derm or your doctor if you need reassuring.

Thank you Bigmac for replying;).
I have not changed my shampoo and the itchy/tingling sensation followed by loss of hair is what bothers me. I don get hair strands in clumps but as soon as I get that sensation a single strand or 2 strands of hair comes along when I itch.

Before my haircut whenever I used to rub or just run my fingers through my head repeatedly I shed close to about 60+ hairs. This has been going on for sometime. I suspect though that this is normal and coupled with this recent development I am totally depressed. I do wish a cure comes along for this accursed reaction to DHT.

Anagen: This is the growing stage of human hair. It lasts anywhere from 2 to 5 years and as much as 85-90% of our hair is usually in this phase.

Catagen: After the anagen phase, our hair enters into the catagen phase, which is a small regression phase. It is kind of a transition stage between the anagen and telogen phases. This phase lasts around 2-3 weeks and about 1% of hair is at anytime in this phase.

Telogen: This is the last and resting phase of human hair. At any given time, 10-15% of hair is in this phase, which can last around 3-4 months. In this phase the hair is just sitting on your body and basically waiting to fall out.

So considering the above cycle, it is normal for a person with a full head of hair to lose around 100 hairs per day. Thus the hair that we lose through our daily hair care routine is normal to lose and will not result in general hair loss.

I agree with Westcoaster, it sounds like a normal situation dude. The key is not to panic because if you do you could make things worse for yourself. I know when i thought i was first loosing my hair i went crazy and tried all sorts of stupid stuff. I even bought a scalp massager that vibrated on my head and was supposed to increase blood flow.....in truth all it did was pull loads of my hair out::;mb. The best thing you could do is visit a reputable hair loss doctor or derm in your area and get an evaluation. There are options if you are starting with MPB so it's not the end of the world dude.
Good Luck

Thanks a ton guys for all the replies and support.
@Westcoaster: Thanks for providing a nice brief summary of the hair cycle.

The only thing that is worrying me is the hair strand that comes out with an in itchy feeling like the hair being popped out and the feeling subsides as soon as the strand comes out.

Does balding at the crown always start near the whorl or its surrounding areas??

I've viewed various crown balding patterns, they vary but more so they seem to thin at the whirl progressing to the wider circumference. Have you a picture of your crown? Is your scalp inflamed at all? Maybe send some pictures to a transplant Doc.

Hi Westcoaster,

Thanks for the help. I am now posting pics of my crown and since I dont have a high quality digital camera, I had to take it with my mobile phone.Nevertheless the pics seem to confirm the worst and I seem to starting to bald at the crown.
I just hope I dont lose myself over this travesty

My crown is not inflamed nor do I have any sort of bumps or rashes. Its just the itchy hair loss sensation

These are pics showing the early stages of balding.
I'll try to post pics in much better quality and after my hair has grown a bit.

Has the crown recently lost hair, you can consult with Ht doctor to have Propecia.
Are you Asian? As you have very dark hair.

Yes I am asian, I have never noticed my crown before, but I think something's wrong up there with the bald spot being so apparent.. Does MPB affect the crown without a receding hairline as I find my hairline to be intact yet???
Some say the hairline recedes first before taking out the hair on the crown??

Frontal loss is most common and the crown is second to this, loss can happen anywhere on any zone. If you can go to Dr Arvind for help as he is specialist in Asian hairloss.

Dr Arvind belongs to India, you also have Dr Wong who has many Asian patients. Asian hair is different to Caucasian hair. Show your hairline with hair pulled up in next picture for inspection to look for loss.

Could you post a picture with your hair wet so I can see your crown in more detail.

I have that feeling most of the time. Itchy/prickly and hot. And I feel a sharp "twing" regularly like the hair has popped out of the follicle. Seborrhoeic dermatitis (for me anyway).

You do look to have a nice head of hair (no need to panick yet), i would try using Nizoral or Regenepure for a while and see how things go.
