Upcoming Transplant questions

Hi all. I've been lurking on here for some time and have found all the information and advice really useful. I'm 34, Norwood 5-6 and have booked to have 3500 FUT with Mr Ball, Ziering in London. I have a few questions:


1. I'm planning on travelling down from Leeds by train the day before. Ideally I want to travel back home the evening of the transplant to get into my own environment asap for recovery period and also as I'd prefer traveling at night rather than in the middle of the day with the scars etc. For those of you who've had a transplant is it realistic to travel by public transport for 3 hours straight after the transplant or have you felt dizzy, exhausted etc? I probably won't get home until 11pm.


2.Also have you covered your head immediately after to hide the scars or is it not that noticeable initially? What have you used?

3. Would going on the London Tube immediately after the transplant be a bad idea (due to the dust / pollution etc)?

Thanks for coming on the forum and I am sure you will get your answers your looking for here, I have not had a FUT so I am not going to advise you on that however , I have known guys who have had FUT and they have traveled the same day without problem , It would be advisable to keep your scar covered from any kind of dust etc and be careful that you dont knock your head a Bandana maybe possible .

Hi and welcome. After surgery you should be fine to travel but clinics usually want to see you the next day so they can wash your hair and check everything is ok.
I've had strip surgery where I did travel an hour afterwards, this was 15 years ago though, personally I think it's best to be seen the following day.
You will need to keep the area clean by having it covered with loose fitting headwear such as a baseball cap or bandana. People react differently to surgery, anaesthesia and relaxing medication therefor there is a chance you could feel dizzy,light headed afterwards which is why clinics like you to rest up that night and return the following day.
If you double check with Mr Ball to see what he advises for you.

Personally after several strip surgeries myself I would stay the night in London and visit the clinic the next day for a hair wash and check up. Yes you might feel ok to travel but you have no idea what time the surgery will finish and you will be very tired. Not worth taking that extra strain in my opinion. You will feel disorientated on pain killers and most likely antibiotics.

You can wear a loose fitting hat after surgery and yes it would be possible to travel back that night of surgery and many people do it and I can understand wanting to be back home but I would hang around and see Dr Ball the next day.

BTW I did a reverse of the journey that you did from Wakefield to the South Coast and it wasn't fun.

1) For either type of procedure (FUE or Strip), it's highly recommended not to take public form of transportation on the day of surgery. Don't subject your newly implanted grafts to all the germs. Up to 3-4 days after surgery, if you are taking public transportation, the recipient area should still be covered.

2) The hair in the back of the head is usually long enough to cover over the scar line but a baseball type of hat or even a surgical cap can be worn right after surgery as long you're careful taking it off and on.

Speak to Dr. Ball on these questions. I think he'll pretty much have the same answers but I'm sure it'll be reassuring to get his protocols.

Thanks for all the replies and advice. The HT is on a Friday so won't be able to go for a review / wash on the Saturday as the clinic will be closed. It's probably best I stay the night after HT. Thanks again.

Hi there. With you having FUT first did the doctor advise how many grafts you have left via FUE?

I didn't actually ask how many grafts I will have left but Mr Ball did suggest a further 1750-2000 grafts on the crown and to make the frontal area more dense after 12 months.

I'm having FUT in July so will hopefully update then with progress.

His patients all appear to be happy with their results which is a food sign, judging by his postings I would imagine you're in safe hands.

Thanks. My only slight hesitation is that Mr Ball hasn't got a large number of online cases to see examples of his work. There's some on this site that swayed me towards him but minimal on any other hair forums. However when I met him he came across as genuine and a nice guy. And I like that he has been trained as a plastic surgeon in the UK which means he will have had very good surgical training.

Dr Ball is a nice genuine guy and is doing some really nice work IMO so I'm sure you will be in safe hands like the others have said. Cant really add any more advice as youve recieved some great answers from the others already .....i just stress though If you do use the Tube be careful with the hustle bustle that you dont bang your head dude.
