USA, Canada or Belgium for a hair transplant ...

Hi, I had a transplant back in 2005. As this doctor was referred to me by one of the most respected hair consultants in London, I didn't bother researching anyone else. Mistake. I wasn't happy with the result and told her this a year after I had the transplant. I asked why it didn't work as well as she believed it would - she had no answer. I have been using toppik for the past few years which is amazing. However, using toppik isn't practical in the long term.

Aged 33 now, I am now looking into a 2nd transplant ...

Ideally I would have liked to have it in London where I live but obviously it's all about the doctor and not where they are based. This has led me to these doctors who, according to results and the 100s of forums I have looked through, are the best ones are around ...

Dr Feller (USA - NYC/Long Island)

Dr Bernstein (USA - New York)

Dr Rahal (Los Angeles/New York/Toronto)

Dr Shapiro (USA - Minnesota)

Dr Hasson Wong (Canada - Vancouver)

Dr Bisanga (Belgium)

Dr Feriduni (Belgium)

However, while I say destination isn't important, New York or Belgium would obviously be more convenient for me thus Feller, Bernstein, Rahal, Bisanga and Feriduni would probably be my preferred choice.

While FUE sounds great, I would accept whatever the doctor recommends. They know more than me!

If anyone could give me any advice that would be much appreciated. After having one that was a semi-failure (the doctor has since been panned for her results from numerous people), I really need to be confident with my choice and hopefully get a successful transplant.

The top two on your list don't show results on here, but the others have all shown consistently good results time and time again. I know how you feel because i am finding it very hard to pick a Doctor out of all the good ones listed on the forums as well.

I'd also look at Dr Reddy in London. He has shown some increasingly impressive results with FUE. I don't have any knowledge or experience to justify recommending him, but it may be worth a consultation. He's actually a repair patient too.

All the other docs you've listed have good reputations and show impressive results. Good luck bud.

Cheers - I will def add Reddy to my short list then. Will try to arrange a free consultation with him. I've contacted all the others now & all want me to provide photos which isn't a problem. Funny how some doctors say I can use toppik after 5 days after the procedure & others 3 weeks! For caution I will def be waiting the whole 3 weeks!

I have a thread on here where I visited 4 Belgian docs for in-person consultations in one weekend! I'd highly recommend trying to do the same. You're in a more favourable location so can do it all by train (I'm in Ireland so had flights and other transit necessary).....but you really can't do better than in-person meets with the docs. It will give you a feel for the doc and clinic and you can go with your gut then.

It made me feel much better about my decision in the end and I'm currently 3 months post-op FUE.

Was your previous HT done via FUT?

Johny Drama's approach is a good one dude....i too would consult with as many as possible and get a feel for who you feel comfortable with. If you are in London i would add Dr Ball to the list of consultations too.

The key here is not to rush and take your time making a decision....make sure you have an answer to all your questions and it would be good to see some past patients if possible.

Id be a bit more cautious with that line of thinking.

Not everyone in this industry will have your best interests at heart. Dont be railroaded in to potentially something which will affect you the rest of your life.

Do your research and weigh things up and decide if a strip scar is something your happy to have the rest of your life. If your happy with that . All good but do your research on both procedures..

We actually ask the patients to wait longer if possible. If they have to use Toppiks, use it minimally and wash it out as soon as you can. Often times when there is an issue of growth or yield is questioned cover ups or a hair piece is worn. If you can do without then do so until you are confident of growth.

Dr. Ball in Hammersmith is doing nice work too so I'd suggest adding him to your consult list.

I will definitely do my research esp after my first one wasn't particularly successful. I had FUT last time - the scar isn't that noticeably unless I have my hair cut really short.

I do want FUE but if the doctors - I will see at least 3 or 4 - say that FUT would work better for me then I will opt for that. The most important thing for me is to have a successful transplant before how it is performed. But yes, I will def by vocal in my support for FUE.

Bullitnut, great amount of information! Just a quick question, how much was it again? I know and def believe this isn't particularly important but our hair levels - pre-transplant - is fairly similar so the grafts shouldn't be massively different. Good advice regarding speaking to former patients.

And thanks Johnny, I actually read your story last week, def liked how you blitz it! Have you had it yet? Guess so but I couldn't see any update since May.

It is just very tricky when you see the doctors in my above shortlist all with excellent results/recommendations. As it has been mentioned by others, it seems the only way to decide which one to go for is by actually meeting them.

Boberto you wrote my thoughts exactly regarding this comment. I just get tired of posting it and it applies to anything medically related. Do not just believe what a doctor tells you it is absolutely the wrong approach.

You believe someone and take their recommendations because they are a good and honest person not because they are a doctor.
