Hi,

I'm new to the whole recovery process. I see a lot of posts that we should try first medicine before transplant, but I don't know exactly what to buy. I do live in London.

Would appreciate any help!

KR,
Alex

Hi @iwe , planning your hair restoration is a key aspect to ensuring your long-term happiness as well as successful hair restoration. Maintaining and possibly improving on your existing hair is important. Your age, hair loss pattern today, the family hair loss pattern you may inherit all need to be considered. Catching your hair loss early can allow you to maintain your hair for many years without the need for a hair transplant. But if your hair loss has progressed to an obvious stage then treatment will still complement a surgical option and combined you can achieve an overall more solid and stable result. You do not want to find yourself in the position of having a hair transplant and chasing future hair loss, needing/wanting small touch up sessions just to keep up the look. It´s not only impractical, costly but not good donor management for your hair.

There are the known FDA approved treatment available that have proven stats for hair loss treatment. Minoxidil, Finasteride, laser therapy. Then there are other therapy treatments such as PRP, as well as popular herbal treatment such as saw palmetto and biotin. You should take the advice of a professional before starting any treatment as they may all have a side-effect that needs to be considered prior to starting, and for example, Finasteride is prescriptive as well. If you search in the hair treatment section on this site you will find a lot of help and ideas.

It´s helpful as said to look at your hair growth pattern and put into perspective what can be expected from a treatment to ensure your expectations are realistic. Whatever you decide to use it´s important to stick at using them and use correctly as advised. Most treatment will take a few months to show any tell tale signs of a positive effect. It may take close to a year with some to feel how well they have helped your condition. It is a good first step in preserving and improving your existing hair prior to considering a permanent solution such as a hair transplant procedure. Hope your research goes well.

Hi Alex.
You say recovery. Recovery is after a hair transplant. If you are thinking of having one, then it is best to research all the non surgical options which the hairdr has covered.
What is your current hair loss condition?

The status is not the best. Age 33. I feel like I want to do non surgical at fist.

For your level of baldness at just 33 I would get on Finasteride straight away if it was me.

Hi Alex. Your hair loss could be diffuse which means it thins all over. It could be risky having a hair transplant if you are continuing to lose hair. Finasteride and Minoxidil are the 2 proven medications that prevent and stimulate dormant follicles to grow. There are Exosomes and PRP which work for some people. I`d research these options if you`re wanting to maintain and possibly gain more hair. Other options are to keep your hair short, see if you like it and maybe then you don`t do anything.

Check out these 2 results.

To get started on Finasteride, shall I go to my GP ?

Your GP is advisable. However, they may not know much about Finasteride so you need to research it and the possible side effects.

I understand the side effects, but I need a proper doctor to advise on what products to buy one, I understand the basics are Finasteride and Minoxidil, but there are plenty of brands and doesn't Finasteride require a doctor's prescription ? Any suggestions on a clinic to get a consultation on treatment ?

Thanks!

There is an abundance of clinics, some will give good advice, others won`t. Some will simply try to sell you a HT. Some will charge for a consult, others won`t. Look at the clinics here and at some close to where you live. There is the option of sending your pictures and details via email for an appraisal but ultimately an in house consult is preferred.
Go see your GP first, if they are willing to give you a prescription then this is the best option imo. If not, they will tell you why. You could still go online and purchase from an online pharmacy that will provide a prescription.

I think trying the best possible way without surgery is beneficial for your hair problem. As i had hair problem because i did not care them much in my life, but when i realised that its getting worse with the passage of time. It was really hard for me to find the best solution of it without having surgery. The thing that worked for me was using coconut oil. But its not a permanent cure. Better if you consult a doctor and try to discuss all the possible ways of treating that without surgery.

If your worried about brands then dont be...if your GP will prescribe Finasteride then it could come from any number of suppliers (usually cheapest) but in general they all seem to work fine however from years of use I've found that Proscar Finasteride is ever so slightly better... for me it is anyway.
