Hair Transplant aged 19

I would guess, that most if not all the replies here come from guys twice your age with about 100 times your life experience, including dealing with hair loss. But because it´s not what you want to hear you will probably discard the help. Not sure that makes any sense when you have been given very good help and advise. It would be good to see your pictures and hair loss stage.

I am listening. The information provided has been invaluable and helped enormously with my decision making. For now, I am holding off doing anything.

I would not consider your hair loss pattern/potential future hairloss based on your siblings. Male pattern baldness can escape generations.

If i were 19 and in a similar position to you (friends noticing your hair is thinning) then i would start using Rogaine immediately (its £25 for a 3mth supply of the liquid or £40 for a 3mth supply of the foam, the foam drys in 5 minutes). In 3-4 months time your hair could really thicken up and go back to where it was 2 years ago.

Finasteride is about £45 for a 3month supply. This drug can maintain your hair and stop further loss, it has maintained my hair for 20 years. Get on google and do some research and make an informed decision if its for you.

Finally if you are destined to be bald completely by your mid 20’s or have an advanced hair loss pattern. You only have a limited number of grafts for a hair transplant. Let’s say you have 5000 grafts, that is typically 12000 hairs that is nowhere near enough to keep your head warm in winter and would give an overall thin look. If they bodge the hair transplant and you only get 50% growth then there is no return from that. This is why you need to do all you can to maintain your existing hair.

If you want to hide the thinning appearance of your hair, buy some Toppik. But remember less is best and only do a light dusting otherwise it will look fake.

Good luck.

I will do more research on Minoxidil, both topical and oral. I see it has benefits but the prospect of lifetime use in daunting. I may consider using until I reach my late twenties. By then, there may be a cure or hair clinic. That would be a godsend.

I hear what you are saying about the numbers. When hair loss reaches 50% - roughly 50,000 hairs left, the hair is noticeably thinner. Continue losing, 12,000 on average will not go that far.

I have not considered Toppik before. Is this the best one on the market?

To all that have offered advice, I thank each and everyone of you. Without your valuable input and knowledge I fear I could have made a terrible mistake. Thanks for steering me on the correct path.

That´s good J19C, take your time and look into the treatments, keeping your hair is the first stage. You don´t have to search too hard on this forum to find younger guys regretting things, or just a hair transplant result not working out they way they wanted. Needing more transplants after. Take your time.

Hi J19C, I’m pleased you asked your question on the forum before proceeding with a hair transplant. 19 is young to be losing your hair but having surgery at this age is not the answer. You’ve received good advice from the members which I’m pleased you’ve taken onboard. Waiting until you know how your hair loss will progress or stabilising it will put you in a better position if you do decide a hair transplant is for you.
While you consider the medication options you could possibly shave or buzz your hair down, you might suit the look. Maybe use a hair loss concealer such as Nanogen or DermMatch.
All the best.

Your words are wise and on point. I have had a private chat with some guys who were in my position and what they say has confirmed what everyone else are saying. I will take a long hard look at some topical treatments.

I am keeping my hair shorter than usual which does help. I will try out concealers while I decide on topical treatments.
