Oral minoxidil and topical Finasteride

As most of you are aware if you followed my thread I was seriously considering a hair transplant until I found this site and learnt quite a bit. I soon realised I was not best suited due to my balding pattern. I decided to give Finasteride a go to see if I could save my hair. After a few rocky months, ups and downs my hair slowly recovered enough to ward off any thoughts of a hair transplant. My research has always indicated oral Finasteride is the best option there is but lately more and more people are saying topical finasteride or oral minoxidil are producing better results with less risk of side effects. From my research both these have been available for a long time, but not FDA approved. What has changed recently regarding these two products?
Are they safer and do they produce better results?

Hi kevboy,
This does not answer your question but can I politely ask - what is meant by Rocky months with ups and downs?
I take it you have had a good response from Fin ?
The reason I ask is that I really need to consider meds - I was once on Fin but stopped due to sides. I’m considering slowly starting again.
All the best

Some months I experienced heavy shedding that made my hair loss worse. I was balder than before I started using Finasteride which I thought was accelerating it but I stuck with it because of the advice I received from people on here. I must have sent bigmac a thousand private messages which he always answered with good advice. my hair recovered enough that I will not need anything done for the foreseeable future.

That’s great news I’m really pleased for you. I also got heavy shedding too as well as sides.

No sides for me but others that did reduced the dose or switched to topicals.

Just topical Finasteride that they source. I read it all over the internet when I searching or the pop up ads I get.
