Day 6 update. Scabs forming and not shifting with the delicate hair wash but I assume will improve after day 7 when I can be a little more committed . This photo is to demonstrate the ridiculous hair style FUT leaves you with . I hope after my hair cut in just over a week this can be addressed to an extent. The photo also shows the asymmetry of the sides I had which Dr Williams has worked hard to correct with the graft placements. I hope others find this useful.

Your right side had dropped a little lower, it’s good to see this was addressed. Post op hair style is usually less than desirable but if you do have it trimmed, it should help somewhat. The scabs will come off when ready. It’s good to let the shampoo soak in to loosen them up and massage a bit firmer each passing day.

Day 8 update
did my first very gentle hand hair wash with baby shampoo and a conditioner as instructed. I was surprised how nervous I was to touch it for the first time. Despite soaking for a reasonable time the scabs don’t seem to have shifted at all but I guess early days. My native hairs have started to show through and join the party. I appreciate these photos are like watching grass grow but hopefully will help someone.

Don’t worry about the scabs not shifting much, they will come off when ready. When I had my transplants I was washing and massaging my scalp quite firmly. I let the shampoo soak in which turns most of the scabs to mush, then massage and wash off.
You look to be healing as expected. How does the FUT closure area feel?

Thanks Bigmac. The FUT donor area is a little uncomfortable. I think it’s the staples rather than the cut. I have to admit it is irritating me rather than being painful, however, the benefits for me of FUT outweigh the negatives.

I’ve had staples on one of my FUT closures and did find now and again I’d get a sharp sting at certain times when laying down but nothing major. It’s just a case of being careful and taking meds if you do feel the onset of any pain.
Once you have the staples removed it can itch quite a bit. Did the clinic provide anything for this? If not, Aloe Vera gel works well.

Day 11 update.
Washing my hair and gently massaging with finger tips for longer to get rid of scabs today. Noticed hair starting to shed. Only 10 or so hairs on my finger tips but I guess more down the plug unnoticed. Information suggests shedding can occur as early as 7 days post surgery so I assume day 11 is ok?

I am interested to hear any opinions on the effect of oral minoxidil on transplant progression. I am taking finasteride and was also on foam minoxidil for 1 year pre-op and stopped the minoxidil foam 1 week prior to surgery as advised. Since surgery I started taking 2.5mg of minoxidil orally for the last 8 days and haven’t restarted the foam. I already underwent the minoxidil hair drop after starting the foam ….does oral minoxidil have any beneficial effects on transplant outcome or change timelines? Can’t see much data out there.

Tomorrow my staples come out!

Day 12 update
Met Dr Greg Williams at Harley Street today for staple removal. All went well without any pain at all. Shedding a little more hair today and more scabs to come off but getting there. FUT scar line looking good at this early stage . Can’t wait for hair cut on Wednesday but got Greg’s blessing to wear a beanie hat now!

I believe the general consensus is oral minoxidil can speed up the growth of transplanted grafts.
Shedding is normal at 11 days.

Your post op healing looks to be going well. The few lingering scabs will fall off over the next few days. It’s important not to be impatient and pick at them.
Getting the staples out would have felt good. You may get the odd shooting pain while it’s healing but thats quite normal. Wearing the hat will help you when out and about. Getting your hair cut after surgery to tidy things up is another feel good factor.
Thanks for the update.

Having your hair all the same length looks so much better. It just looks like a regular buzz cut now. Having this first haircut in 10 years will be a good confidence booster that will continue as the growth kicks in. Wearing the hat will help while you heal and wait for said growth to happen.
Keep on smiling.

Day 19 update
More and more shedding. FUT scar occasionally itchy and some areas still tender.

Healing looks good. The itchiness can be annoying. I sometimes used Vaseline along my FUT closures once my Vacitracin ran out.
Certain parts can stay tender for a while. Every now and again I’d get a sharp stinging pain on a certain spot when laying my head on the pillow. I know sone people just pre empt it by taking pain meds before going to bed. I just accepted it.

Exactly 1 month post surgery (31 days)
major shedding has occurred and I guess 70-80% of the transplanted hairs have shed. My original hairs have grown at least 1 cm. Despite being fully prepared for the shed and 50 years old I have found the shedding phase quite hard to deal with . This has surprised me. No one has commented and I don’t tend to wear a hat/ beanie when I go out but I am feeling really self conscious. I know everyone has been through this but wow it is tougher than I thought!
