Rapid greying after hairtransplant?

If you've had a hair transplant, have you got rapid greying afterwards, and did it go away?

I have consulted hair transplant surgeons about this, and the answer is the hair cells might go into some sort of shock due to the transplant, and it greys and then it reverts to the ordinary color. But does it? If you've had a hair transplant, did you experience greying? And if so, did it revert to the original color afterwards?

Have you had a hair transplant and experienced this?

I am considering a hair transplant, and so many before/after pictures have greying after. So if you or anyone else have done a HT, I'd like some words about whether or not greying happened to you.

Hair colour and texture can change until it matures/regains it’s characteristics.
How old are you?
Would some of your hair changing colour be a problem for you?

Too old. Yes it would be a problem. And the feedback I have gotten from surgeons is yeah they use a heavy anesthetic injected with a syringe, and this stress can cause greying. You say it can change until it matures / regains its characteristics, but for those who do experience rapid greying, are you sure the greying goes away?

It seems to be especially some surgeons who have after pictures with a lot of grey. All praise to them for showing it, but it makes me worried doing a HT, and any members who have had a HT please share your experiences. Greying or no greying.

And big mac. Have you had a HT, and if so was there or wasn't there greying.

Could it be on the before and afters pics that the patients were actually using hair dye before?
I am more gray on my back and sides so the HT will have moved some of those gray hairs on top. Things like that could also give a "sudden" gray take over look for some people as well?

Good to think about these things but personally I'd rather have hair on top even it's if gray than no hair!!

If the hair changed to grey you can dye it. Percentage wise it’s a small number from the results I look at.

Could be sometimes, absolutely. Some times there are different colors completely. But notwithstanding that I see especially for some surgeons there is a massive increase in greys all over. It's something acknowledged but the surgeons I have been in touch with (two of two surgeons) and one speculated about the REASON for rapid greying following, and said trauma to the hair. And it should pass. All good and well.

But many of these pictures are taken long long after the transplant, thus it looks like the HT has given rapid permanent greying. It also seems like there are big different surgeon to surgeon. Some have close to zero greys in the after, but other HT clinics have so much grey in the afters it must be something they're doing causing such greying. Amount of «trauma» to the hair follicles is the only plausible answer I have.

I’ve had multiple hair transplants without the hair changing colour.
A decade later my hair is ageing and changing colour.
It did change more in the donor zone with a distinct pattern.

Thanks a lot, Bigmac! I am already using Just for Men and if I get more gray it wouldn't scarcely cover it. I've had one «bout of greying», and it was unleashed by stress as severe as it can get. So I am hoping I'm not especially susceptible to greying following «physical stress». I hope not, and think not. And it's encouraging to read so many people not having had rapid greying after a HT, since such greying photos seem to crop up in the after pictures of several clinics. If you're up for it, please let me know more about that greying pattern, even though it was unrelated to rapid greying.

Hi @BeforeSunset

This patient had grey in his donor area prior to surgery as can be seen in the image below. As the transplanted grafts are taken from the donor, hair will keep its colour and characteristics.
In the comparison photo that you have shared, look at the patients skin tone. Lighting can be very hard to match in different environments and this will pick up different tones. With more intense lighting, the below donor would have also presented more grey.
