What men feel they have gained from their hair transplant?

Obviously going for a hair transplant (or surgery of any kind) requires a certain degree of courage. As someone soon (hopefully) to be under the knife I wondered what the real expectations were before the surgery and if these expectations were met - or will be met with follow-up work.

For me, I'd like to think I came out of this with a hairstyle that would allow me to take maybe ten years off my look, be able to relax about my hair when I'm out (i.e. not worry so much about wind, rain etc) and have people think -'he's looking better than I remember' but not really know why that might be...

Also if I can hook up with a Jamelia look-a-like I won't be complaining either.

Hi Baldspot.

With me it was a confidence boost having my crown filled in and the thought of feeling younger as i believe people seeing my thinning crown associated it with getting old and thats how i felt.

Now i dont mind people seeing my crown and i feel so much better when out socialising.

As for Jamelia, here she is all for you.

Well it's excellent to see that the work you've had done has turned things around for you.

That's clearly a boost for the novice HT guys here. I'd like to think I'm fairly realistic with my goals but I'm eager to speak to Dr Ron first hand and see if he agrees - hence my trek to London in March for a pre assessment.

I was just interested in finding out how many guys felt that the end result met their expectation and (perhaps) turned their life to the positive.

This is likely a topic not discussed enough or possibly people avoid it so that they can maintain their "dream". You have asked some good questions and personally I wish that there was a 1 size fits all answer but I don't really think that there is as things are really going to vary depending on your individual situation.

There are many factors that come into play as to what the eventual outcome will do for you:

-current state of hairloss. NW6+ and above obviously will have less impact on what can possibly be achieved with a HT

-hair characteristics

-size of session/sessions and what a person is willing to spend

-persons own emotional state

-physicians ability

In my case as what I would consider to be hoveriing at that NW4-5 (diffuse) category there has been a pretty dramatic change already with one quality HT at roughly 2900 FU.

1. I would have to say that it likely did take up to 5-10 years off my appearance or at the very least made me look and feel like the 40 year old that I am.

2. I certainly do worry a lot less about what my hair looks like in the rain and wind, especially cool since I had a previous small pluggy HT years ago.

3. I have more of a choice with hairstyles.

4. I can shower and go so much easier than prior.

5. All of the above has given me much more confidence in social settings.

6. I do feel that I am more attractive to the opposite sex. Embarrassingly I will admit that the other day I found out that some patients of mine have knicknamed me "doc _abe the babe". It was started by highschool students?? Admittedly I am tall and they likely can't see my thin crown.

I have definitely had some people look at me and "wonder" about changes and a couple that even questioned about getting more hair. I think that if I had another decent sized session people would certainly know that I had a HT, not because of it being unnatural but because of the considerable change from prior. I would have to guess that those that knew me as a NW5ish would wonder why I looked like I had a full head of hair. Who knows though? Hope this helps to answer your questions.

NN,

I think you need the top down shot as the before and after in the pic you posted don't really tell your loss as much as this:

Thanks for the feedback NN - as for BigMac I'm kinda dreading meeting him and his flowing locks on the Monday while I try to explain my ideas to Dr Ron and Janna - I'm expecting a lot of combing and flicking of hair going on... Just kidding as I know Bigmac has been there and suffered before he found the right people to fix the shocking work he had the first two times out.

I agree that results are the sharp end of the whole HT business so it is interesting to ask how many guys feel its been worth the treck and the cash to get there.

Personally I have quite high standards in most things and feel I'm sub standard in how I look which is linked to my hair and its style. I don't seek to 'dodge' my age but would really like people to look at me for once and think 'he looks good for his age' rather than 'what's going on with that hairstyle'.

Hence the fretting and the cash to try and remedy this...

The answer to the question: 'what can *I* realistically expect to achieve from a ht' is one that is so seemingly ambiguous and undefined (and RIGHTLY so, because even a dr. doesn't know the precise answer) it has been the single biggest deterrent in my decision making progress; trust me, your not alone!

-you'll have an improved look. (true)
-you'll have more hair. (true)
-you will never have the head of hair of an 18 yr old again (true)

but as far as what exactly each individual can realistically expect to achieve goes: it's so relative and based off of so many variables that NO ONE can know untill they under go the procedure; at least that's what I have concluded. Maybe if I saw some ht results in person I might feel otherwise...bleh.

For me, two things come to mind to push me through the decison:
-hair loss is progressive.
-I will never be happy being completely bald.

Bleh, long rant, sorry but this question obviously plays a major role in the decision making process. I don't have unrealistic expectations in the slightest; but I just find it so bizarre when I read posts like:

"just had ht w/bosley and found this site: I'm freaking out, what did I do!?!?!?"..or "I had a ton of shock loss and had NO IDEA this could happen"...

BS..

Some may find this hard to believe..

But... I for one, knowing what I know now would have just "gone bald" as mother nature intended....

My main (and only reason) for having an HT last year was for a repair... I had no option but to opt for an HT repair as my old Uk HT plugs were showing and to shave down was not an option due to scars etc... and looked terrible.. it was these plugs that affected me and were starting to have an effect on my life... to the degree that I avoided seeing old friends etc etc... some of whom I knew had gone bald or were thinning.... a bad HT is 100 times worse than MPB...

My goal was to have a "balding" but "natural look", which I hope I have achieved...

To get back to the main question...what have I gained..

Confidence is the main gain but now looking more "normal"... I no longer worry about people talking to my hairline rather than "me"...

HT's by the right clinic are fantastic now (as shown on this forum) and I think that if anyone wants to improve their appearance and therefore their self confidence by having one.... great...nothing worse than that withdrawn and paranoid feeling brought on by the curse of MPB... but there are many happy successful bald guys out there...but the choice is the individuals...

Tim

PS..

NN... "doc-abe the babe".... man you have given us so much ammo with that one.... will be saving it for the right occasion :):):):):)

Did you look "normal" prior to any hair transplants??? A good HT's can do wonders for people but come'on, I'm not sure what it can do in your case. )(_::

Aww, bn....you're such a sweetheart. I know I feel I've made a true life long friend in you too. You're an incredible guy and I hope you always know that and you're deserving of what you just received.

To me friendship is being honest and direct with each other. So if I happen to make a mistake or say something to piss you off, you should let me know directly and not run off and cut off all ties. I may make mistakes but I don't ever intentionally try to hurt anyone or stab them in the back. Well, I have your address - I'll hunt you down like an animal though.....lol.

Just noticed this thread had popped up again...

Giving it loads of thought, analysing my life, contemplating the rigors of the ups and downs of the surgery, downtime against leaving my crowing glory in the mess it was....

I would have to say that the thing I have most gained from having a Hair Transplant is Hair.... boom boom...

Sorry... ;;D
