What is a Hair Transplant ?

What is FUE ?
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). The individual removal of hair follicles in their naturally occurring groupings of 1-4 hairs. A FUE punch is used to scor a circular incision usually between 0.7 – 1mm in diameter, the graft containing the hairs are removed with forceps.
What is FUT Hair Transplant ?
Follicular Unit transplant also known as FUT or Strip. A strip of skin is excised from the back and sides of the head in the safer donor zone area, this area consists of hairs that are usually resistant to DHT. The skin is then sutured or stapled together to close the gap. A popular method to close the gap is trichophytic closure which usually leaves the patient with a pencil line thin scar.
What is a Follicular Unit ?
Hair grows in tiny groups, anywhere between 1 and 4 hairs, sometimes 5 or 6. These groups of hairs are known as Follicular Units. Units which consist of just a single hair are referred to as a single graft, most of these contain two to three hairs referred to as two hair or three hair graft. These are small independent units which can be damaged during surgery which may result in poor hair growth. So it is important that they are removed carefully. Some Follicular Units may be split to create single hair grafts, single grafts are utilised in the hair line, creating a natural look.
What are the causes of hair shedding ?
It`s normal to lose 50 to 100 hairs per day. If you are losing more than that there could be an underlying reason. The first step in finding out how to stop hair loss is to determine what’s causing it. While male pattern baldness is the leading cause of hair loss, there are many other causes, which include: stress, malnourishment, pregnancy, sleep deprivation, thyroid dysfunction, diabetes, telogen effluvium, lupus and certain drugs.
