Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) is also known as strip. A strip of scalp tissue containing hair grafts is harvested from the donor area, which is the region of hair on the back and sides of the head known as the SAFER zone. The donor area will then be sutured or stapled together for approximately ten days, once healed they are removed. The hair from this area is for the main part genetically programmed not to fall out. These hairs are usually permanent. The strip is then dissected into individual follicular grafts containing between one and four hairs. Microscopes are used to aid in this process.
The grafts are then placed in a Petri dish with holding solution specifically for tissue storage. The Petri dishes are put on a ice block to keep them cool until they are ready for planting into the recipient zones.
The newly transplanted grafts will fall out within the first two months after surgery and begin to grow at approximately 4 -5 months. The transplanted hairs will continue to grow 12 – 14 months post operatively. The newly transplanted hair will go through the same resting and growing phases as your normal hair.
