Scalp Pigmentation (SMP)

Scalp pigmentation is becoming a popular treatment to mask hair loss and can be applied as a temporary or semi-permanent solution, lasting from around six months to several years before requiring a touch-up. The treatment differs from traditional tattoo art in terms of the tools used and the application of the pigment, as colours are not used, only tone and the pigment is not placed as deep as with traditional tattoos.

The pigment is applied to the areas of hair loss to create a tone contrast between the pigment and skin complexion, this gives the effect of not seeing the scalp. The quality of the pigments used is important to the result to avoid blueing, as is the experience of the Technician to be able to create the look and a natural hairline design.
Scalp pigmentation can be used to create the illusion of a full, shaved head of hair by blending in with the surrounding hair, even advanced levels of male pattern hair loss can be treated. Unsightly scarring can be masked with scalp pigmentation, long, diffused hair loss also, adding the look of greater fullness. Other hair loss conditions such as alopecia areata and Universalis with men or woman can benefit from the treatment.

Although results are immediate it normally requires several sessions to complete the result. The time between sessions can vary between 10 days to months, depending on how the pigment takes to the skin. There is mild discomfort and if required a numbing agent can be applied.
