Hey guys,

I decided to join the hairlossexperiences forum due to the state of my hair loss affecting me greatly. I have been suffering from severe depression and anxiety from childhood (since the age of 2) due to trauma being passed down from family as they are oblivious to the concept of mental health. I’m 25 years old and I have experienced severe hair loss on my crown area leaving a bald patch and this has progressed to the middle in which the hair strands have miniaturised.

I have been taking dutasteride and using regaine minoxidil for 9 months with zero progress, however I am currently still using the products till this day. I have been wearing a cap regularly when going out due to the fact that I’m young and I can’t accept the fact that I look like this at a young age. I knew I was losing hair from a young age since 17-18 years old but the hair loss progressed aggressively by the time I was 22. I didn’t really reach out to help because I was still studying at university and I have now graduated.

I have been making appointments to dermatologists who suggest that a hair transplant is the best option. I have heard good things about the hair dr with lead surgeon Dr Arshad and have had a pre consultation with the secretary who has said that I can have 2 sessions which are 12 months apart each with 2500 grafts. I have been leaning more towards this clinic due to their reviews and 0% interest in finance as I am a graduate. My heart really tells me that I want a hair transplant as I really care about my body and image.

I completely understand about the horror stories people have posted with regards to bad transplants from surgeons who do not know what they are doing but I have heard positive reviews about Dr Arshad which I why I’m considering going for a transplant. I was hoping if people could give me some background on this clinic and that if it is worth going for a transplant and how legit they are.

Thank you.

Sorry to hear you’re suffering because of your hair loss. Have you had any help for the anxiety and depression?

Do you have any pictures you can share that show the extent of your hair loss? There’s a good chance the meds you are on are working and preventing your loss from progressing.

Hi - sorry to hear about your situation, I know it can be rough.

Like BM says, it will be worth talking to someone, like your GP, about depression and anxiety before you consider a transplant. I think it's best to make sure you are in a good place before making such a big decision.

A few of us on here have been to the Hair Dr and there are lots of detailed journeys that could help with your research.

Thank you so much BM it means a lot. My mental health has improved dramatically, I have had counselling which helps you to get back to doing your hobbies and interests which is all completely fine. I’ve cut out a negative individual in my life who was bringing me down and I’ve never felt better. It’s just that during the time I had depression I believe it was one of the few contributing factors to my hair loss.
I have attached the images of my hair loss below, all 4 pictures were taken 9 months after using minoxidil everyday which had no effect. Pictures 2, 3 and 4 were during the last lockdown and I couldn’t get a haircut since barbershops were closed.

Thank you I appreciate it a lot, I have been feeling better and more optimistic about my future goals but the hair loss is just making things go a lot slower. I’ve had councelling which has helped me and I will be having CBT quite soon but overall my family and friends don’t see any glaring symptoms.

I’m a young man and hair loss has affected me a lot since my hair loss is aggressive. I’m not too sure what to do here but I had a pre-consultation with the hair dr and they said I have a “very good” donor region and are offering me 2 sessions of FUE 12 months apart with 2500 grafts.

Given how aggressive my hair loss is I believe that it’s very likely that I will be getting a hair transplant done in the future (I don’t know when) because you have to move on with your life and there’s certain things that come in the way in which a full head of hair will be essential for my self esteem.

Like mentioned above there are lots of detailed HT journeys regarding The Hair Dr and you will be in safe hands with Dr Arshad and his team. I had mine with the Hair Dr and I’m off to see him for my 1 year post HT consultation on Thursday. Regarding mental health when losing your hair, having a HT has made a massive difference to me personally about how I feel about myself and has improved my confidence greatly. I saw 2 people this weekend who I haven’t seen since my HT and both commented about how well I look and I look younger. They do not know I’ve had a HT!! For me it’s been a game changer.

Hi @AI 7

I just wanted to clarify a few points about what you took away from the video consult I had with you last week:

1) I am not a secretary, I am the practice manager and do all the pre consults/vetting.
2) You have aggressive hair loss with a strong family history. The crown hair loss appears to be dynamic and there is crown loss dipping into the donor area.
3) Oral DHT blocker/ topical Minoxidil are very important and should be optimised/continued to retain as much hair as possible and stabilise.
4) You are on the very young end of the spectrum to consider a hair transplant and need to think about this very carefully.
5) If you do eventually decide to proceed with a hair transplant then a staged approach in your case would be better to try and achieve your expectations. An initial procedure capped at 2000 to 2500 and see how the donor recovers. This would only be offered once the surgeon has assessed your case and especially your donor area in person.

In conclusion you case is not straight forward and you should proceed with caution, consider non-surgical options first. Also address other psychological issues related to the hair loss prior to surgery.

Happy to support you further and all the best with your hair restoration journey.

Regards
Sommiya.

Hello Sommiya,

My apologies for the mistake, I tend to get mixed up with naming the roles of people within a company/ business but I am fully aware of your role within the industry. I completely agree with the fact that my hair loss is aggressive as I have been told this by another hair loss clinic, they have also mentioned the crown loss dipping into the donor area so I am aware of this.

With regards to the oral and topical treatments I have been routinely using them without fail and purchasing more in advance to make sure I do not miss out a day. Unfortunately I have not seen any progress but there is no harm in trying as I have to exhaust all possible options.

I am also young as well and it is unfortunate that I have experienced hair loss at this age for a few years but a hair transplant is something I definitely would go for in the future as the signs are pointing to that direction. I definitely would not be able to attend the dates you have mentioned in the previous email you have sent me so I would maybe consider a future date. I am considering a pre consultation with Dr Arshad in person quite soon and this is probably the best option moving forward.

Overall I agree with having two sessions for my treatment as we need to see how the donor area recovers after an FUE procedure. My family are open to the idea of me having a procedure and would like to come to Leeds with me when I am getting my treatment done. For psychological issues I am making great progress and my current environment with the support available couldn’t be any better and I am feeling extremely better these days, the symptoms I was feeling is something I believe was a contributing factor in the past when the hair loss got worse.

I will be looking to see Dr Arshad in person soon for an appointment to discuss my options moving forward.

Warm regards,
Aamir

That is amazing to hear! A HT can help a lot with confidence and mental health, I completely understand how others feel when they lose their hair and how it impacts their lives and how they are feeling. The hair dr has helped to solve a lot of hair loss problems for a lot of people so that is why I feel that they are extremely helpful in helping men meet their expectations.

I have recently just had a haircut so I’m not sure if that would hinder anything with regards to seeing if the donor area is good or not but from my consultation and images above, the donor region hair tends to grow quite thick when it gets longer and looks pretty good to me.

Good advice from Sommiya, you need to get your loss stabilised so its crucial given your young age you use the meds. Please listen to her advice too and sort your mental health issues before a potential HT.

@HairDr I liked your post and approach on this guy and this thread, sounds very ethical!
